Hi There

Getting my line Ukonline-ed in a week. Just wanted to know if someone knew a way of getting a more accurate line length than Samknows?

Cheers

Line length is not your only concern. What the line is made of has a massive affect - my line (as reported by the BT engineer who installed it) is 3.5Km. But I have a 55db attenuation.

Why?

Something called Aluminium

Can I ask how you know how many km away the exchange is?

I know where my local exchage is but I couldn't say how many KM there is.

Doh, I had an ali line when I was at Uni, was terrible, managed to get BT to swap it for a copper one and it was much better. Thankfully according to Tolien I should have dedicated copper pair this time.

Agghh dial up is killing me lol

UKOnline should be able to run a test while you are on the phone to them determining the length of cable running from your exchange to your house. Bulldog do it, UKo might.

Yeah tolien. I cant remember what I was asking about but I mentioned my exchange and you said it would be dedicated copper pairs all the way back to the exchnage, i dont even know what that means lol

Er not quite.

6.02km straight line

You cannot receive 2Mbps ADSL
You may be able to receive 1Mbps ADSL (I allready have)
You can receive 512Kbps ADSL
You can receive 256Kbps ADSL

You are approximately 6.02km from the exchange (straight line distance). + about another 3-4km wiring around roads or wherever :(

Thats not too bad compared to me - im 2.8Km from my exchange! with an attenution that should mean im 6-10km away :D

Versus what kind of attenuation/SNR margin though?

Attenuation: 49.5db down, 31.0db up
SNR: 31.2db down, 32.0db Up

I have no idea if my cables from exchange are copper or Aluminium

but BT say you need 43db or less to even get 2mb and I do live quite far away from the exchange?

Bt are very conserative.

Its only now they have implemented their "rate adaptive" systems, that every ADSL line can manage itself.

Before this, if they enabled someone for 2mbit, and did didnt work, they would have to send an engineer to find out why. When you consider how many lines in the UK wont support 2mbit even with maxdsl, you will realise how much this would have cost BT to do.

Now that each line will run stable at its maximum rate, they do not care what speed your line syncs at.
