Im well overdue a phone upgrade. Believe it or not (don't laugh) im still using my original iPhone.

Now for everything i use it for, i could do on any smartphone. The only thing that im not sure i can do on other handsets is get a line out for playing music in the car.

I have the horrible feeling the answer will be no, but i thought its worth asking anyway.

I think ever phone can do that. My mate uses line-in as the usb is kinda busted and it works on my Samsung galaxy S, on his iPhone and his Desire so I'm guess this is the case with most smart phones.

Maybe im using the wrong term then. Im referring to an audio signal that bypasses the internal amplifier.

So i can connect my iPhone to my car stereo, and only the stereo controls the volume.

Lol really? Pretty much every phone over the past 8 years has a line out. How else would you listen to music, plug earphone in?
No. You're thinking of a headphone out which all phones do have. A line out is something else.

Aspect, what's wrong with using the headphone out? Just turn off any equalizers etc and put the volume at about 70%. I know it's not exactly the same as a dedicated line out, but will you really notice the difference?

Oh and you are using the right term :)

Nothing wrong as such. I've tried both ways, but to me the line out sounded better. I use a cable like this in the car, so i can run line out and keep it charged.

I just wondered if anything Android or Windows Phone 7 could do anything similar?

I was pretty sure i was right that it was called line out :)

ah i understand. if you want to completely bypass the phones amp etc.. it's not a line out you want, that would be analog, so you'd still be using the phone's DAC.

You probably want some kind of optical or SPDIF, then you can either use a dedicated external DAC or the DAC in your car stereo

It is just the analog i want. The car stereo runs it through the aux channel, so it doesn't have to be any more fancy than that.

It is a Line-Out mate, and he does want analogue. :)

I don't think I've ever seen an optical auxiliary input on a car.

they exist. but for crazy reason optical-supporting amps and headunits are monumentally expensive and as a result pretty niche market. Why, i dont know, as it solves all of the interference issues you might find in a car install and it's not as if using spdif is expensive.

I used this on my original iPhone too, was nice with the useless iPhone eq

I have to say I don't know of any kind of other phone that does it. Then again power amp on android has a proper eq banded eq

You can buy a music kit that connects to your cars audio system. It uses a bluetooth A2DP connection to transmit the audio from your phone to your car.

Some nokia phones using symbian can do this, but i honestly have no idea which ones.

Apart from that it's the iphone only im afraid.

Rumor has it android 4.0 might allow for this in the software, whether anyone will make use of it is anyone's guess.

99% sure in the current market it's only the iPhone that has this due to the 20pin having the lineout in the design. The rest rely on the A2DP profile.

I thought as much, but i was hoping i was wrong. I guess I'll just stick with the iPhone a bit longer.
