Time for a new monitor? 
There is a text-mode CD version, instead of the LiveCD. I'm pretty sure that will work for you.
Or you could just download the entire DVD version, which packs nearly everything from every type onto 1 disc (very handy)

i think it is time for a new monitor. I have just put the disc in my laptop and ubuntu loaded up straight away, no trouble (only running from the disc though as i havn't saved it to the HDD yet)
In fact i'm typing this message on ubuntu
(firefox has a really handy spell check plug-in aswell)
