The groups on LinkedIn are quite useful for speaking to other professionals within your industry around the world, and they're a good way of attracting potential clients/employers. In many markets you can become a bit siloed, so the groups are genuinely quite handy. Some of them are only open to staff at certain levels, so you tend to only get conversation at a high academic level, too.
While the number of recruiters who hassle you about roles can be a bit annoying, it's quite flattering to get real interest in your skills from businesses themselves. I could have left my current job once a month on the basis of the non-recruiter interest that comes in via LinkedIn and I'm not really even that active on the groups.
