Linking Mac to PC via USB/network

Is this possible? I have a standard to usb B to usb B cable and wondered if I can use any software to link my PC and my Mac via a USB cable?

Alternatively - how can I make the Mac and PC communicate with each other via my router? The PC is directly connected via RJ45 network cable, and the Mac uses the wireless connection.

Once you have them communicating, what do you want to be able to do between them?

Transfer files...

I managed to set up my drive on the Mac as shared, and accessable via ftp IP address.
On the Windows pc I then added the ftp address as a network place within My Network Places.

If they're both connected to your router, they are already networked.
