Ive just installed a Linksys WRT54GS which is running 1 wired connection to this PC and a wireless one to my laptop.
The connection is fine for both computers and everything works at a decent speed.
But when i go to get on the routers config (http://192.168.1.1) my internet connection dies and i have to turn the router off and back on to get the internet back on.
I can get on the router config page when i do this, but only the first page as it dies after that.

Anyone else had this problem ?

What firmware are you running on it mate? Also, what version have you got? If you look undernearth, the first few letters will be something like CGN1/2/3/4 etc.

Just to clarify, it's the serial number you're looking for, though mine actually says "Model no. WRT54GS v1.1".

It shouldn't be doing that, and I'd be inclined to return it as faulty - but the v5 WRT54G and WRT54GS is pretty poor.
You might find it's worthwhile upgrading it, but if you can't get to the web interface without it screwing up, that's going to be a bit hard :p

Yip. Most serials start CDF (not CGN as I thought earlier). In fact, I've just found this site here which will allow you to determine your model.

Ah, I see yours says it's a v5. It certainly shouldn't be performing like that, but if you can (which is highly doubtful as they aren't produced - but you could get one 2nd hand) they are great with some 3rd party firmware.

whats the best software for it then ?

Might aswell give it a try if i can get on the bog standard stuff :D

There any difference in functionality aswell between the 3rd party and default software?

Thanks

The latest Linksys will give you is about your best shot, especially if you do have to return it.
Anything else is quite likely not going to be that different - since it all has to be cut down to fit in the reduced memory the v5s have.

Generally, the third party firmware has more features, as well as enhancements of existing ones.

Finally got it working with the newest firmware update, no idea why it was happening in the first place, any suggestions for 3rd party software for the router then ? or just stay with the standard?

one other thing ive just noticed
when im on IRC after a while it disconnects me saying

-22:12:23- * [10053] Software caused connection abort

hasnt done that with my old router / no router ?

this happen to anyone else and you know how to fix it ?

The link Mikol gave links to about the only third party firmware that'll run on the v5 WRTs. But as I said, you're unlikely to gain much.
