Hi I just set up a linksys WRT54GL. This is my first ever router. My dad has just told me that gaming is really slow, high pings. Anyway to fix this?
Also I just ran a shields up test and its reporting some ports to be open, and some closed, none stealth. This means I'm not protected properly, anyway to sort it?
Many thanks, Scythe

I dont think that's anything to do with it, all that's going to do is leave your PC wide open on the net. You never need to place your PC in a full DMZ for playing games online, ports would only need to be open if hosting games. Forwarding ports also wouldn't be needed as the router will forward all Unsolicited packets to the PC in DMZ

to add are you downloading anything while playing on the games? try it without downloading anything and try different servers and different games.

what results do you get if you ping the bbc website out of interest

This is the text report for shields up too.
GRC Port Authority Report created on UTC: 2006-10-10 at 15:06:29

Results from scan of ports: 0-1055

2 Ports Open
1052 Ports Closed
2 Ports Stealth
---------------------
1056 Ports Tested

Ports found to be OPEN were: 254, 255

Ports found to be STEALTH were: 23, 80

Other than what is listed above, all ports are CLOSED.

TruStealth: FAILED - NOT all tested ports were STEALTH,
- NO unsolicited packets were received,
- A PING REPLY (ICMP Echo) WAS RECEIVED.

out of interest what do you get if you type in

ipconfig /all in the dos prompt

the ethernet cable from the modem is plugged into the WAN port on the router and the PC plugged in to another port (typically numbered 1,2,3 and 4)???

SPI part of the firewall enabled??? should be in the security tab of the router config, odd why the ports are showing as open, never used one of those routers but a fair few people on here have them

above is the ping output :p

which seems fine to be honest, may have been a busy day on your line in your area with regard to the ping on the games

I'm on 1mb BB with 200 ping since adding this router, im sure its the router to be honest. I will post the Xfire ping servers thing. Do I have to forward every port that I use?

If you are playing a game you need to forward the ports it uses, different games use different ports tbh introducing a router shouldn't increase your ping by an insignificant 1-2ms at most.

When using Port Forwarding, do I need a static ip?

Also, got it working. But I've ran out of spaces

Anyway to get more spaces to put ports in?
