Linksys WRT54GL and ADSL Router

I currently have an ADSL Router (DG834) I wanted to add a Linksys WRT54GL
to get access to wireless and to get at the advanced features that you can get with 3rd party firmware.

I understand that the Linksys does not have an ADSL modem built in.
I was hoping I could use my current Router as a modem. Is this ok to do or can anyone see any problems occurring?

My main worry is how I go about setting up port forwarding and UPNP with there being two routers.

I guess you would just turn off DCHP on your ADSL router so it simulates what you might expect from a standalone/cable modem. Then jack it into your GL as normal. I wouldn't mind knowing myself if this will work as I may have to get the GL set up with my homehub for a week or so until my VM connection gets activated.

Connect the two routers by their LAN interfaces and disable DHCP on one of them. No NAT, uPnP or anything on the WRT54GL, but you lose some of the feature set.

The alternative is see if your router will do half-bridge mode.

Sounds right enough. You'd connect one of the switch ports on the DG834 to the WAN port on the WRT, and then all your port forwarding would be done through the WRT - the DG834 would become transparent.

Hmm sorry to hijack this thread but i'm having a few problems with my DG834PN as it keeps dropping packets randomly causing quite a bit of packet loss. Switched to my BeBox and everything was fine after that, not ideal though as its a bit of a rubbish router.

Be don't need a login and password for their connections and i was just wondering how this would work if i stick mine into modem only mode and stick a GL with it.
