Linksys WRT54GL problem

Hi, I made a thread bit back about routers, and 90% recommended me this router.

Every time my flatmate uses it, the router goes insanely slow, and I can't even connect to web pages.

If my flatmate who has a cable uses it, it's no problem. But if the Flatmate on wireless uses it, it goes extremely slow.

what can i do to solve this? took me 5 minutes to get to this forum :mad:

Have you tried putting on the latest firmware on the WRT54GL at all? From Google searches it seems to be a bit "hit-and-miss" on firmware for these routers and general speed.

The one thing I would do though is disable the wireless for now and see if you can replicate the problem with your friend on ethernet to see if it is the wireless that causes the problem or if your friend is running a P2P application.
 
Its a p2p problem I think. he uses azereus, but he only uploads 3kb/sec :S

also, when I made the thread about routers, everyone told me this router is the best one ever, they can download/browse/game at the same time without a problem :S

I don't think I have the latest firmware. Where can I get it? I have never updated router firmware before, and I don't want to mess it up.

If it's just your flatmate using Azureus then I wouldn't bother upgrading firmware but if you want to try you can get it from Linksys' official site.
 
I heard someone told me something about "tomato firmware" <-- where can I get this, and how do I update my router with it?
 
I used that tomato firmware and it seemed to give real poor wireless strength/signal :?

Using that DD-WRT now and it feels far superior, nicer interface and seems more usuable.
 
If you use P2P you ahve to use after market firmware with this router, because it remembers connections for 5 days and that causes the slowness problems.

I use HyperWRT Thibor http://www.thibor.co.uk/

I tried DD-WRT but that seemed no good to me, after a day or 2 I had to keep rebooting the router with that as I coudnt' even access the routers control panel.

I also had this problem, just updated to the latest firmware (v24 RC5) and it has seemed to fix my problem, otherwise its a vote for DD-WRT from me, its nice and easy to do the WRT54GL just make sure you wire yourself into the router.

I'm not sure if the connection settings are quite so retarded after the firmware update, but you may have to set them yourself still. I think increasing the number of possible connections on the router and decreasing the TTL worked here, along with limiting the upload to 30kB/s (out of a possible 90kB/s). Limit the number of connections on the bittorrent client as well.

Another happy Tomato user here, installation is a doddle and it even remembers the majority of your settings when you upgrade the firmware. You might have to configure your wireless settings/security again after though.

Bittorrent and wireless, multiple connections etc. all working fine on the latest release for me (granted that's on a WRT54G not the L though).
