Right, my router has gone up the duff i think, keeps resetting itself (currently got a D-Link DI-624, if anyone knows how to fix it let me know) else i will be buying the router in the title (becuase im tight and only have £40 inc pnp to spend). now firstly, am i going to have any problems at all with it? and i mean any.. thats why i like..liked my d-link. out of the box NEVER had a single issue with it.

Whack dd-wrt on it, it'll be grand. I've got two here running in WDS mode. Fabulous things. The aerials could do with upgrading a bit, but aside from that it's all good.

Cool, i see lots of people raving on about dd-wrt. is that actualy any reason why I would need to do that? or any bonus that i will get out of it? just i dont want to get a replacement router and brick it the day i get it as i cant afford to replace it..

Sorry im not being funny, but i take that as a no there is no special reason to put it on?

Well, no 'special' reason I suppose, but having a more stable router is good enough reason for me - it's stupidly easy to do, you just upgrade the firmware via the web interface and give it the dd-wrt image.

The reason to put a 3rd party firmware on is that it is more stable, fixes bugs that linksys haven't and allows you to use features the router supports (afterburner) but will not be enabled by linksys for marketing reasons. It also gives you a whole list of genuinely useful features such as QOS, the ability to boost wifi signal strength if required improved voip support and the list goes on and on ... It's also got significantly better docmentation and support.

well, kool - i shall get this router then probably :) cheers guys.

one last thing - if i do exactly as im told what are the chances of bricking the router?

Hi,

I also have a D-LINK DI-624 and after 2 months it also keeps resetting itself. Let me say that this is the worst router you can ever buy. I already had another router like this and after 3 months it used to lock itself and from where I bought it they gave me a new replacement.

Let me also say that D-LINK support is absolute crap. They will never reply to your problems.

I would also like to know which is the most reliable router that I can buy.

Thanks

does the dd-wrt only work on the GL model of the linksys?
On the new ones, yes pretty much. The other models don't run Linux. They've crippled the G versions with a tiny amount of flash ROM to prevent the installation of 3rd party firmwares. Though you can try it on some using Micro versions of the firmware, it's a less-than-optimal solution. Older versions all ran Linux so if you're getting secondhand and to get a version 3 or 4 G, ias they're the best versions.

nice info matey

cheers!

I have one of the crippled later WRT54GS models, version 5.1. But even the cut-down DD-WRT Micro I have installed is much better than the stock VxWorks firmware.

Tomato 1.06 Firmware

Can anyone help me please?

Guys I'm after the above firmware for my WRT54GL arriving tomorrow but all the links I look at on the web are dead??
