Linksys WRT54GL

I use Hyper-WRT+Thibor+15c as I prefer the Linksys GUI and layout.

Had my 1.1 GL (they only make 1.0 and 1.1 and it doesn't matter what you get as all GL are the same) for exactly 34 days now and my uptime reflects that on the router :p 166GB downloaded in that time which is a mixture of Torrents, HTTP, FTP and that's with 2 wireless and 2 wired comps and wireless boosted to 67%.

Solid as a rock router :)

just got one of these WRT54GL's, it looks like I made the right choice reading the posts on this thread.
I'm looking forward to trying out some of the firmwares as I'm off work for a few weeks, it'll keep me out of trouble anyway :D

doggo

Use tomato here, stable as anything - not had to reboot the router in nearly a year now (obviously i have at points, power cuts etc) but the point is i've not HAD to becuase of the router itself.

I dont think you can go wrong with either tomato and DDWRT :)

DD-WRT and Tomato are both fantastic, I use DD-WRT on my main unit and Tomato on the other one for testing, for what they are they're superb.

hi ppl got a quick question, does this model support a 20 mb connection ,also i belive i can turn off the wireless and use it as a wired connection thnxs for any help.

Yes on both counts.

It'll depend on the firmware you're running, but the option to disable the wireless will be in the Wireless tab (on mine it's Wireless Mode -> Disabled). It's not exactly rocket science...

So just to 100% clarify before I pay at the checkout this router will run a Virgin Media 20Meg connection at a full 20Meg WITH the firewall ENABLED? As this is the problem I am finding when shopping for a new router, either the router will not run the connection at a full 20meg or its costs over £150 notes and needs some sort of anual licence to be paid.

Many Thanks.

PS Oh what wifi card would you guys recommend for a laptop to go with router?

Yes it will run the full 20MB - I have the Linksys WMP54GS with mine and have no issues.

If I recall it won't handle 50mbit on the WAN according to an article I saw on what was Tom's Networking some time ago but that's going to be a problem with a lot of routers not just the Linksys units.
