Linn to stop CD Player Production

When they make statements like "It claims that a CD recorded onto a hard disk can achieve a higher quality than one played on a CD player. " you have to wonder....

Damn, that is a shame :(

I will not be impressed when they stop making CDs, which will surely happen. At the moment there is no decent alternative, mp3 is clearly worse and very little is released in anything better.

A CD copied to a HDD on a computer is technically better I think, as data jitter is eliminated by the computer "asking for" data again if it doesn't recieve what it expects. Playback from a HDD is basically jitter free I think. Probably some bogus terms in there, but it's something like that, the comment from Linn does make sense :)

Not surprising. As long as the mp3 format is high, then unless you have a system in the thousands£ then you wont tell the difference. It's also likely that flac or other totally lossless might start kreeping in. It makes sense, no moving parts, smaller, easier to obtain and produce and less and less people buying cds/cd players.

It's sad but true.... BUT I'm not so sure that is not some commercial issues behind it.
For a fact their DS (Digital Streamers) do out perform the CD players now... I know I own both, having the range topping Unidisk 1.1 and the mid range Akurate DS. The DS simply sounds better streaming a FLAC file off my NAS. Then the DS range has the next generation of DAC's that were never put in the CDP's.

So in theory they could match the current "Silver disk engine" CD mech, in to the new DAC's ideally feeding into a memory buffer, to simulate what the DS system does, there by equalling the performance.....

What I wonder is behind it, is it's expensive for them to produce there own CD mech, which they have traditional done....(I also have an old Karik, which has one of the best draw mechs about).... So they are getting ahead of the game moving on to streaming only... makes commercial sense I guess.

If your a "Linnie", it's been a big success with the take up of DS players, we all have moved over now !!! LOL

What is needed is for more companies to follow what Linn Records is doing, and that is offering Studio Master downloads, as well as FLAC, MP3. So you can have 320kbps up to 24bit 192Khz on most of there catalogue. (They don't offer less than 320 !!)

There leading the way on all fronts, and the results are pretty awesome... hopefully they are are not too far ahead and get their fingers burnt....

For the tactile feel experience, there is always vinyl ;) :D ..... an here the latest spec LP12 has put it's self back on top of the pile... all be it a bit uncompetitive on price in IMO.

Quite ironic really. I remember when CD players first came out many people said that Vinyl would die out - yet its still going strong:):):)

True.... and Linn were very critical of CD when it arrived, refusing to make a player for some time until they were happy they could produce something that would meet their expectations.... Then eventually going on to produce the CD12 !!!
So seems quite fitting that they are first to kick it into touch !

Can't say I'm surprised by this news. For me, vinyl still leads the way in sheer enjoyment of the music.
