Linux 3.12 Brings Big AMD Radeon Improvements - 90% Improvements

This is about the open source drivers, not the closed source Catalyst drivers.

There are two sets of drivers for Linux for both AMD and nvidia. The open source drivers included in the kernel, and closed source binary drivers downloadable from AMD/nvidia.

The open source AMD drivers have always been reasonable, but poor in performance for 3D compared to the proprietary drivers. Improving the performance would make them fine for light gaming, so might be a good option for an APU type system. It's also good for older hardware, which won't receive any more development from AMD.

AMD's working on improving performance in the Catalyst drivers too, but that's not what this article's about.

Steady, i'm not sure Valve would appreciate the potential suicides :D

I don't know what its like these days, the last time I used it was circa 2007, I remember trying to manually set a resolution and refresh (was stuck in 600x400) and going round in red screen circles for a good hour before I sorted it :D

I think that would have been bad even for 2007 - now the hardware is detected on start up, and the native resolution automatically selected. You only need a config file if you need to override something or enable a feature that isn't on by default. The desktops have config apps to support resizing, rotating etc.. All that said, X is going away - Wayland and Mir are likely to take over.
