Hi all. Have just installed Pardus 2008. The installation was easy but I can't get connected to the internet via my Speedtouch USB modem.

Is this a common problem with Linux distros? Or should I try an alternative?

Thanks.

Generally speaking .. You should plug in USB modems into the REAR USB ports ( Mobo Mounted).

Dunno why.. I had an issue with a Netgear USB wireless dongle on Feisty and googled it. Thats what it recommended and thats what worked !!

Like I said - Pardus 2008. All the methods I tried were far from a doddle. Help greatly appreciated.

Doh! I googled "Pardus" and all I got was links about an MMO, so thought you meant you had installed the game and wanted to play it online :p

That's what I did and the modem appears to be ok - no flashing lights and all green. So why I can't set up a connection ala windows is beyond me.

Be sure to drop the manufacturer of the modem a note asking them to support Linux. they provide drivers for Windows, Microsoft doesn't have to do a thing. Linux hackers have been writing their own drivers for these things with remarkable success, but without the proper hardware documentation it'll always be a reverse-engineered hack.

For Linux to get big we need hardware vendors to remember that we exist! Every time some piece of hardware is poorly supported you should let the manufacturer and the distribution maintainers know about it. If nobody tells them they may never know that the thing doesn't work.

Generally speaking ethernet is the best supported so using a router and ethernet is the optimal choice. Wireless and USB modems are improving on linux but they still got a way to go compared to windows imo.
