Im at uni and doing a few things in linux and would like to know the space required for the install and not much else what size HDD would be worth getting for just linux as a mess about OS not a main OS.

Also i assume i can duel boot windows and linux

Which distro? I would say get 10gb for the OS side of things which should be plently (I think Ubuntu recommends 8gb), then however much space ontop of that for your files. 50gb+ should cover pretty much all your needs, not like GBs are expensive anyway :)

You can dual boot easily, the easiest way is to install windows first, then linux last to avoid bootloader issues. Theres loads of threads and info on how to set up dual boots so you shouldn't have any problems hopefully.

ok thanks for the help
ill just disconnect my windows HDD when i install Linux
cant remember what distribution ill use the one my uni gives me.

Once you install GRUB on to your Windows drive it can be a swine to get rid of. So I would if possible install Linux on to a totally separate drive and do make sure your Windows drive in unplugged.

If you wish to run a basic custom partitioning system try this out:

/root = 15gb
/home =15gb
/swap = 4gb (double your memory at the very least)

That will get you up and running :_)

Don't worry if you want the option to dual boot once you have grub installed and both drives are connected up. It is very easy to edit the menu.lst file so that it points in the direction of the windows hdd.

You'll need to look closely here:

Any problems you can ask on here but I wouldn't install grub over your MBR on the Windows drive.

cause ill have 3 drives when i buy a linux drive
1.Vista
2.Linux
3.Media / games
i dont plan on using my media drive with linux so when i get my drive ill post for more help thanks.

But using virtualbox/vmware is the easiest solution really.

Overkill IMO. If you are just playing around then 8-10GB is plenty.
1GB swap (could get away with 500MB really)
500mb-2GB /home
rest as root.

Linux will be able to access your media/games drive.

You can run *some* (but all may not be supported yet) games with a program called wine, which is why I always keep a windows drive around for gaming.

True say I didn't know much about his ambitions nor his specifications.

I actually recommended using my setup because if he is using a big drive he could use the rest of the drive in Windows for storage. That's what I do.

Wise move.

If drive number 2 is big enough you could use my filing system but drop it to 10gb and use the rest of the space for media/games :_)

Two birds with one stone I mean one drive with two purposes.... lol

my setup is
1.300GB windows
2.750GB Media
3.Linux for study use only - network and programming FORTH and OZ

dont need the linux drive to use media drive in anyway.

e6600 , p5n32e,4gb ram, 8800gtx

dont think my pc spec should cause issues as im only looking for basic use to play around with not to use as a main OS in anyway unless ofc it is really good

The uni im at use FEDORA 8.0
got a 80GB HDD i assume this is plenty of space for linux
Also is this distribution alright to use or shall i use a different version instead?
