hi all

i am doing my final year project at university this year and i have decided to do it on " the impact linuxs has on 3rd world countries"

i just wanted some ideas in what i could look into as the topic is endless

any ideas will be welcome.
thanks in advanced.

The obvious thing that comes to mind is the One Laptop Per Child project, and how its suceeded and failed and what it set out to do etc.

IMO its more of a hardware issue in the 3rd world than software, but linux being free clearly would make it the main choice in the 3rd world, maybe cover usability and free education apps etc.

As you say its a pretty wide area for a final year project. Would suggest writing out a pretty detailed spec and make sure you know what your gonna cover :)

You could also mention what tactics a certain other OS manufacturer is using to try and thwart the adoption of open source OSes in 3rd world countries, and the reasoning behind these tactics.

Language support might be interesting to look at too - does Linux have the potential to support more languages due to the nature of it 'community-ness' that other OS's might ignore? - does it have the ability to behave like a Wiki, with many people contributing to it?

It might also be interesting to look up a definition of 'Ubuntu' (the philosophy) and see how it fits in with the idea of Linux & the Third World. Personally, I think community is a very important part of what makes Linux great (& great fun to play with!!).

Another thing, I suppose, is how open source software is like a free car for people to play with & learn (drive around in, build, rebuild - see what makes it tick :)), and in turn empower people to teach and work together and use the free product for the good of the community.

It failed, and OLPC now ships with XP. Is that a success?

Linux is a failure in Africa, because they rightly worry their people would be out of touch with the rest of the world - which is a Windows world. Remember the drama about some entire country dumping a Mandriva take-up in favour of Windows for that very reason?

Do you mind me asking what degree you're doing? If it is politics or something of that ilk then this could be really good, but if it is a more science based degree then you may end up straying way off topic...

i am doing a computer network and security degree, i know it already sounds as if i am doing a project which has nothing to do with my degree but i really fed up with the whole course, but as its my last year it be a waste to drop out.

i not really good at programming so thats out the question
after doing 3 years of networking it bores me to death
i only know a few linux command so a linux practical is out of the question

Well if you knew why did you ask

Because I hadn't looked into it and was asking YOU with your knowledge of classmates. Then I had doubts and looked it up when I had a chance....

I bet Venezuela got XP ones ;) Or at least MS will wade in with some backhanded cash incentive to reinstall all with XP.
