Linux install problem

Just got a shiny new Conroe system this weekend and I'm trying to install linux on it. However, it comes up with a "missing driver" error when I install. I think I know the cause of this problem - that the motherboard is the gigabyte ds4 and therefore has the ICH8 chipset on it, which, if I understand rightly isn't properly supported - but I just don't know how to fix that.

I'm trying to get CentOS installed on there, but I do have a copy of debian around too. Oh, and they're both x86_64 versions... The two sata drives are running through the ICH8 raid drivers, although are not in a raid array. Running them in either the ACHI or "Disabled mode" doesn't seem to help either. The DVD drives are running through the P-ATA slot, which I think is running gigabyte drivers, but I'm not sure. I already have a copy of xp x64 on there, and was hoping to run the system as a dual boot between the two. It doesn't matter too much if I have to unistall xp to change to achi or something like that, though.

I hope someone can help me out. Thanks.

If your mobo is not supported, it's not supported. Maybe next time you need to check whether the software you want to run will run on the hardware you buy.

I don't buy a PS2 game and then complain it doesn't run on my N64, becasue it's not supported.

Maybe a bit harsh, but tough cheese - take the board back and complain it doesn't work with your software - i.e. not fit for purpose.

I did a quick goole search for 'ich8 linux' and it seems you might have more luck with more recent kernel versions (2.6.16 and on?). Of course I have no experience with this chipset and Linux, but when I first built my amd64 / nforce 3 machine most (or all) of the Linux cds I had didn't have a recent enough kernel version to support the nforce3 chipset (therefore no internet connection) - just because something isn't supported doesn't mean it won't be supported :)
