I have dabbled with linux a little bit but never full on and im seriously thinking about dumping xp in favour of linux but I need some questions answered:

1. Can I record and edit mpeg2 video, at the moment im using Womble Mpeg2Vcr as a quick and easy mpeg editor

2. Can I still use Dr Divx or programs like it that allow straighforward compression

3. Can I use a radeon 9800pro all in wonder with linux and be able to record with it etc

Told you im not really hot with linux, its about time I got into it properly :)

If you already have XP, and it does what you want, why the hell do you want to dump it?

FYI I have never found a decent video editing package on Linux.

I'm probably going to be sticking to windows for a while now for my desktop needs, but all others will be done using linux boxes (File Server, Mail Server, download box etc)
Mainly as I play games on my DT, and other than using some sort of emulation software (which support may not be all that great) I don't think Linux is much good for gaming. (Steam for example does not have a Linux client)

I want to dump windows too, except I play games and apps don't run under linux...
Instead I have a dual (tri) boot.... and 4 linux developement servers....

Why do you want to dump Windows?
Dual booting would probably be the best way to go. I use Linux for most things but if ever I need something that I can't get I boot into Windows.

Games are much better under Windows than using Wine. Also I use a shared computer and there would be no way my woman would ever let me dump Windows no matter how many time I show her how good Linux is to use ;)
