hi, am thinking of a new build using older pc components to host a number of hard drives filled with various media for use as a media server for my PS3 to access. Trying to keep my build cheap, i want to consider using something ilike ubuntu or suchlike instead of forking out for a windows licence. now i was just wondering if anyone else has done this or is there any pitfalls to watch out for?

I'm in the same boat as you. I have my server parts arriving today and am looking forward to the build.

For the OS I was considering running Amahi, http://www.amahi.org/
This runs on top of Fedora, and would provide virtually all the role support that the server would need. There is a feature called Greyhole which ensures data is duplicated across drives for redundancy much like WHS offers.
Amahi does not to my knowledge support transcoding of media, so was going to try to get PS3 Media Server installed alongside.

If anyone else has already tried this please chime in.

Anyhow, hope this helps.

I use PS3 Media Server and Twonky on Debian.
Do you run them concurrently?

Today, I've been looking for something that will work with my Sony Bravia TV which while it does support DLNA is very picky. Twonky seems to get quite a few nods though I think the bravia won't accept anything xvid despite it being happy to play them off a memory stick..

Just wanted to say thanks for the heads up re: mediatomb - I haven't got round to the new build yet (awaiting delivery of a mobo and CPU cooler) but will deffo be looking into this very shortly. I have done a lil research on mediatomb and it looks like it could be just what the doctor ordered!!
