Linux Mint 9 RC released

I've been a Mint user for a few years now, it's just so much nicer to use. I must say however than 10.04 has done a lot to shorten the gap, the Mint team will have to pull something big out of the hat this time round. I, like many of the Mint forum members, think that Mint should become a completely Debian based distribution and separate from the Ubuntu project altogether so it can grow to something else.

I must say though, the boot speed of 10.04 is staggering.

Going from 50mb ntl to 1mb BT is painful :o

Lol I'm on a 1MB connection too as I'm in the middle of nowhere :( The most painful thing being that it costs MORE than the city packages which are loads faster too!

1MB connection and a download limit for the lose. At least I'm at a client site today in London and so downloading at the moment at 5MB/s! In just over 100 seconds time I shall be able to have a play :D

EDIT: Balls I left my USB stick at home and so it's stuck on the desktop PC just looking at me! I shall have to grab it another time lol. Looking at the screenshots though it looks the same as Mint 8 and I think i prefer the taskbar from Ubuntu 10 (well the icons anyway).

i just installed this (in vmware on a windows host :o) and it has lots of nice touches for a noob like me. hate the green though. that has to go. :p

I personally use Ubuntu, with the release of 10.04 it's just a real treat, although I did have problems with getting it to work with an ATI 5850 and HDMI output.
Had to install it with DVI and then install the ATI Drivers then reboot using the HDMI output, from then it works fine.

Linux mint is my next best choice to a Ubuntu distro, I have to say it does have a better layout that the KDE resemblance and it has all needed codecs already installed.

But if your used to Ubuntu & Gnome then I say stick with it, plus the new purple and black is very nice :)

Essentially Mint is Ubuntu with better bits. The theme was miles ahead of the old human look, and while the gap between New Look and Shiki is considerably smaller i know which i'd rather have. And that's not stock 10.04. I can't say until trying it out, but in the past pretty much everything about Mint has been just that much better. The Software Manager, The Update Manager, The Menu etc.

They should add more themes to it, like..

peppermint -blue
aniseed -red
softmint -white
everton -white/black

What's mint and 10.04 like for netbooks? I know there's a netbook remix but it killed the battery life on my EeePC. Just wondering if anyone had used it.

What's the battery life like? On XP I get 6-7hrs out my mine (6-cell). Asus EeePC 1001HA.

UNR reduced it by up to 2hrs. I think it was lack of power management options.
