Linux N00b ... Simple Questions

I want to run a linux box, with a torrent app and nothing else for now.

What is the best distro to use ?
What app is recommended ?

Will be controlled via VNC and needs to be simple to use

I may want to fiddle further in the future, but this is my simple aim for now

Recommendations please ? I've been recommended ubuntu as a good starter.

If hardware makes a difference, its an oldish intel mobo with onboard sis graphics, celeron 2.4 (ish) 256mb DDR and an 80gb sata hdd

I would use Torrentflux for the BitTorrent app - you wont need VNC, its all done via web interface - http://tf-b4rt.berlios.de/

And for the distro, give Ubuntu Server a whirl - should do the job just nicely

Why would you need VNC when you've got SSH?

Find the link then through ssh use "wget link"

Then do something like "rtorrent filename" and bobs your uncle. Add in WinSCP to the bundle if you want easy secure file transfers off the box.

VNC is awful. If you really want a GUI, look into FreeNX
