Hi all i'm a linux newbie and would apprciete some advice as im wanting to put linux on an old machine it has an amd xp 1700 cpu with 1 gig of memory and 40gb hd with a gefroce 440 mx and a kt 266a chipset with onboard sound and would like to know what the best linux os would be best for the setup as i have been reading most of the newer linux os's require a 3d card capable of 3d hardware acceleration on the desktop and as far as i know the geforce mx 440 does not support desktop 3d hardware acceleration.

If some one could recomend linux software that would work with the hardware above i would appreciate it .

thanks

steve

Well used the windows installer and it crashed when rebooting but used the acai work around option and it's currently finishing off the install :)

Will give it a try on my pc I went for the games and emulators plus been able to play windows games appealed to me but found u can get the play on linux software separately so will try that out .
Thanks
Steve

Give Xubuntu a look also. Its Ubuntu (so very well supported) but with the XFCE desktop environment which, as others have suggested, would be the best choice for a lower powered PC :)

Lubuntu (LXDE) is even more lightweight.

I'd give Crunchbang (lightweight Debian based distro + Openbox) a try, though.

Also, it's Linux/GNU and Xfce. :p

Can't seem to get any linux distro to install I boot from usb or CD, DVD and it just goes blank . Do I have to disable plug and play in bios and let the bios assign Irq's . And does it matter what u set ur sata devices to in the bios I have ide mode and raid plus and AHCI . even triad installing distros from windows and selecting them from the boot menu on reboot but even with it installed through windows it hangs right after I select the linux os as the boot os.

Thanks

Steve

The pc I'm trying to install it on is the setup in my Sig as I have managed to get the old pc setup and running with xubunti with no problems .

Yea it's easy if it don't hang at boot as soon as u select the linux install as soon as I select install. Lol

Managed to get the ball rolling and the CD to boot without hanging by enabling the nomadic setting. WhatdWhatdOedipuss this option do and will it affect the install at all ? .

Thanks

Steve
