I hear very good things about peppermint OS ... based on LXDE / (Lubuntu I think?) should be very sweet on your old hardware whilst looking very modern.

I've yet to try it but if pinguy OS 12.04 is too heavy for my laptop then peppermint will be a must try for me

Try Crunchbang instead. It's very lightweight, Debian based and uses Openbox WM, so very customisable and even lighter than a full DE like LXDE. I recommend the Waldorf image, since the stable release hasn't been updated in a year or so.

It's a Live CD version so you can boot if off USB to try it out.

Sounds like a good option for the OP but not for me.

I don't think I would go all the way back to OB/FB as I do like a bit of eye candy especially since today's hardware can handle it.

I've got used to desktops like this

Subliminal Aura what version of linux is in the video and where can i download it ?

Sorry noticed after i had posted about the video info didnt notice it at first just love the desktop and how it all works and looks going to download the pingeee os which i believe is the right one and tryit out as not having much luck with the others and still looking around to get more info .

thanks

That desktop environment is pretty nasty tbh

[edit] no offence intended of course, I just can't deal with that level of clutter if that makes sense

I like your desktop id not have as much on display but its layed out well. Pitty yhat it also dont work every distro i try boots to the menu then when i select install or eother run live cd it launches then hangs only way to get it to run is if i select the nolapic option but soon as it ibstalls and i select the linux boot option it hangs and not that knowledgable to work out what to do to get it running once installed :-(

I'd give Mint a go, I've been very impressed with the look and feel of it.

I've previously always used Fedora, but I absolutely hate Gnome 3.....
