Okay - I have bitten the bullet and slowly moving to Linux (Centos desktop - kinda cool to be honest) and am looking for a decent(ish) NZB client.

On Windows I have been using Newsleecher, so is there something as good you penguin boys use?

If it wasn't for my MSDN account needed IE to access my membership I would change me lappy to Linux as well!

All I ask in a NZB client is that you don't need 43 A levels to figure it out - I know how you Linux lot like to make it complicated ;)

+1 great app

there's no app thats even remotely as good as newsleecher for a genuine newsgroup program though ....my advice is to use a VM and run NL within windows, i've done that and it works great.

Im currently making an nzb downloader for KDE4, god knows when it will be finished :p But I suggest klibido or hellanzb is also good as mentioned.

sabnzbdplus, not sure if the gui is available in linux aswell. Like hellanzb but with a gui and more features.

NZB is a great app, but needs installing from source on RHEL/CentOS/Fedora. I posted a how-to on the Fedora forum at some point, which I'm sure you could adapt easily to CentOS if you want the link? It's a nice easy, clean dedicated app but it doesn't have integrated par checking (you can still par check using par2 or pypar2 for example).

Another good one is Ninan, which is a Java server-side type app accessed through a browser. It will download, par check and unrar your downloads from an NZB file or Newzbin post ID :D

You could always look at Windows clients run under Wine. Newsbin for example is supposed to work nicely with Wine under Linux. BTW, there are ways to install IE in Linux - try Google :)

you can use newsleecher 3.9 with wine, using wine-pthread to load it.
ninan is decent, very easy to set up though, controlled through a web interface
sabnzbdplus is the best without using wine, no proper gui as you control it through a web interface.
NZB is still quite buggy for me, and hasnt been updated in ages.

sabnzbdplus is great for a lightweight nzb utility also Pan works well with no problems and is a doddle to setup.

tried newsleecher through wine a few mths ago and it was buggy as hell, half the time it didn't load and even when it did it was prone to crash on cue.

i'm not familiar with wine-pthread though, is this some kind of new loader or something which helps the above problems???

SABnzbd plus, might need compiling in some linux distros you can get the DEB package for ubuntu and debian though.

I used to use HellaNZB. However now I am using Ninan which I prefer (the RC of version 2) as it has a really good web interface.

hi guys...

Picking up on an old thread I know, but I found it googling for an answer on how to get Newsleecher running on Ubuntu 8.10 via Wine.(I'm only on Day2 of my Linux learning curve so still dont know what's what yet...)

NL installed ok but hangs when starting it up

I'd heard a few +'ve comments re: Ninan so DL'd it - unpacked it - now I've got a Ninan folder on my desktop, but I'm stumped on how to install it ....it's not on Ubuntu's repos so cant install it via Add/Remove, so I've just left it there for now till I find out how to install the thing! :p

Thought I'd try the easy way out for now and use Wine....but that's not proving to be that 'easy' either.....(at least with NL...everything else seems good though..)

Anyone help me out here?

cheers if you can give me some advice...

oh right, just seen the mmmmmmmmmmaaaaaaaassssssssssssiiiiiiiiiiivvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeee bumpage.

Not being rude dude but why not try a linux app, if your not wanting to try new stuff maybe best sticking with windows.

Hellnzb and sabnzbd are good.

I think sabnzbd is amazing, but you may like something else.

As I said...I found this thread via google and I'm only on day 2 of my linux journey and needed to get a news client up and running pretty sharpish....I'll read up more as I go along, but for now I needed to get a couple of windows progs to run before I can look for their linux equiv.

Thanks for the pointer to sabnzbd, I'll check it out ;)

i use Lottanzb - its a frontend to hellanzb and dispite the cheesy name its the best i have found that runs natively on linux. I have also successfully used grabit via wine but was unable to get newsleecher to run properly.

sabnzbd for example will be quicker to setup natively rather than fighting to get wine and newzleecher to work.
