Hi all,

Never used linux before, and heard its free.

anywho

i will be wanting to sell my current machine soon, and just wondered if I am able to install linux as its OS.

I will be wanting to install MS Office on linux before its sold.

Can i do this? how easy is linux to use? can you basically do the same as windows etc?

pretty daft questions to u guys i know but i'm a complete noob when it comes to linux

Not sure why you'd want to put ms office on linux. Especially to sell it.

But you can run office using codeweavers crossover office costs money tho. Altho you could probably use a CVS version of wine to run it.

Or you could just install openoffice which is free and comes with many linux install disks.

I still don't get why you want to put linux on to sell it, unless you don't want to sell your windows key. But then if that's true why do you want to sell your ms office key? lol

Does the person you're selling it to use linux?

Download a Linux distribution & give it a try (or get a copy off one of the monthly Linux magazines). Plenty of distributions to choose from: Ubuntu, Suse, Fedora Core, Mandriva ... and if you wanted to test drive Linux (without installing it) why not download and burn a copy of Knoppix?

Openoffice is a pretty good alternative really. MSOffice, I hear, is better but only if you are going into all the power usery options. I've not been hit by anything in open office yet that I've needed and thought "********, that isn't there". Mind you, the presentation software is a bit worse than powerpoint is. . imo.

Still, its an amazing bit of software considering its free. (Edit: And it reads ms office docs, .doc, .xls, .ppt, etc etc)
