Hello folks :)

I'm looking to delve in to the world of Linux and Python and I'm hoping you guys can help me out. I have an old netbook lying around (one of those little Intel Atom jobbies with a gig of RAM) which I will probably turn into a tinkering machine, but I've also got my eyes on the new Pi 3, another product I know absolutely nothing about, so I don't really know where to start.

First off, will I be able to find drivers for all the bits and bobs on this netbook, or is it better to go with the Pi, which seems to have a massive following?

Secondly, which Linux distro is the best to use (I'm aware of the complexity of this question, just looking for some opinions) for a beginner? I'm assuming I can learn Python on all of them?

I'll probably pop in and ask questions as and when, but as always, help is always appreciated :)

Delve in, get something like Linux Mint on that laptop and start playing with Linux and Python.

I suggest Linux Mint as its a nice easy way to get Linux running out of the box, rather than something like Gentoo or Arch, but distros really are a personal preference.

Drivers are usually fine. For most distros these days they "just work". On a recent debian install I had to do a bit more work but it was fairly easy.

Ubuntu or Mint (based on Ubuntu) are very user-friendly ones to start with.

Thanks mynsa.

Funny you should say that... :D

I have Mint, I've tried formatting a USB drive to install it on using Rufus and Universal USB installer and in both cases, it refuses to boot.

No idea what's going on, might try a different USB.

Instead of spamming links to my distros of choice - I'm going to suggest OP might want to checkout distrowatch - it's a good site for seeing what different distros are available with screenshots and review links etc. (overwhelming yes, but once you get your head around the basics in Mint might be useful): http://distrowatch.com/
