Linux vs Windows 7

If you do not like the thread then just ignore it and don't take part. No need to get out your pram. Some of us are new here and debating OS's is intersting to us.

Like I said, I work and play with most of the OS. I wasn't in my pram to start with ;) every single week I see people winging on about it. I posted a message to state it. I like talking about OSs too. I work with each on a daily basis. :eek:

I envy you. Working with 3 diffrent OS would fry my brain. Smart people are such a turn on.

Grab VirtualBox and have a play with different operating systems yourself, it's pretty fun if that's what you're into. Over time stuff will just stick, you don't need to be smart to pick it up!

I would not trust myself. A bad experiance with regedit in windows a few years ago scared me into not venturing into unknown terretory. I know my limits when fiddling about with windows.

There's a maxim among Linux users - if it aint broke, fix it 'till is then reinstall and start again. The beauty of free software is that as long as any important data is backed up you don't have anything to worry about.

I will play about when I get an external hard drive. the trouble is I am busy uprading fans and graphics cards and stuff. So not yet in a position to risk my data.

That's the other beautiful thing about virtualbox, you don't need to worry about anything because the linux install will run in an abstracted virtual machine you can run from within windows, you can smash it up and break it up as much as you like and windows will never be affected ;D

Try the new Ubuntu ;) You will see...... I run Virtualbox and everything work's fine......

I was about to do this but then I saw a screengrab of Ubuntu on download.com. I have to say it looked a bit old hat and basic in its interface. It is things like this that put me off. I wonder if such openscource OS are a couple of years off really comeing into thier own. But then even if they do come into thier own, there will never be the power of markeing and mafia style microsoft bullies to truly get them into the ring with microsoft. I just would like jthe public at large to have choice. We have choice in all other areas of computing but when it comes to OS people think windows and the slightly better informed might think mac.

You can make Ubuntu look pretty slick if you so choose. I ran it for a long time a few years ago with Compiz Fusion. And that was back when you had to spend an hour just installing it. I believe Compiz is a part of Ubuntu now. Chumps have it easy now! :p

I don't like the usual pigeon-holeing you see in these threads.

Linux = Productivity
Windows = Games
OS X = Media Production

What a crock of ****.

Aside from mainstream games, all 3 OS's can do pretty much any task you ask of it, and do it well.

The interface can be as simple or as bling bling as you want. Which really is the whole point of Linux. It's NOT a straight out of the box "standard" OS. The interface in Linux can be tailored to YOUR choice. It's just that you have to invest a bit of your own time and "grey cells" to get it as you want.

:)

@idroid - can you run older XP games through/via that Virtualbox version of XP?

Thanks for that. I was biting my lip over here. This thread ain't half full of some FUD with extra sauce on top!

Both OS have their merits, up to the individual to choose which one they like.

I personally dual boot and use both. I use Windows mainly for gaming, sometimes if I need to use software like PS or SKU, rest of the time, which is majority I used Linux. If Linux supported gaming better then I would hardly have any use for Windows.

Perhaps I was too quick to get stuck in with the same old stereotypes. Since i made the switch to Linux I have always had a bit of anti-windows stance when it comes anything other than gaming.

I resent giving Bill Gates any more money. Nasty little man he is.

This. One hundred times, this.

Just pop a few live cd/dvd's in and give them a whirl.

Ubuntu/Mint over the last few years have basically caused me to forget most of what I ever knew about linux, everything I want just works. I kind of miss the old days of having to bugger about a bit now and again.

And just about anything is better than Vista, let's face it. :p

I find myself going back and forth. I have a desktop with Windows 7 on which runs perfectly. My laptop I have ubuntu 10.10 on it. I like both although I do find that Windows 7 is the system is can do more with and find myself perferring it over ubuntu.

Ubuntu is coming along nicely though. It will certainly be an interesting few years.

As for OSX, I've used it a bit but never as my own machine. I'd love to rent an imac for a month or so and really use it to see if I would like it.

Edit:
Linux = Productivity
Windows = Games
OS X = Media Production

Just LOL. Seriously.

I have Win 7 on this machine but it's only used for legacy purposes.

ie: When we find we just can't do something in Ubuntu. ie: Hardly ever !!

But then, I/we don't use our computers for gaming.

We have a Ps1/2/3 and a Wii for that mullarky !!

I've gone over to Linux all apart from 1 machine which I can't switch unless I want to do a load of sketchy kernel hacking, which is my laptop and getting switchable graphics. When I get my momentus xt I might try it before I install it, but until then I'm alright with having 1 machine out of 4 which runs Windows.

I made the switch just because I was bored, then funnily enough got a new job - which was quite heavily Linux based and inherited a machine which was running Ubuntu. So it's now second nature to me and I prefer it to Windows now, admittedly there are a few things which I have to actually work at to get working, but that's way more fun than just doing it as I know exactly how windows works. :)

And yes, I still game on Linux too. I'm a bit of a WoW addict, and that runs perfectly on my machine.
