Possibly the easiest linux distro on the planet, the wonderfully noob friendly Mint 6 is now released for your enjoyment, just like an After Eight. :)

For the masochistic among you that cannot free yourself from the security blanket of Windows this version also includes mint4win, their version of Wubi so you can test it until you decide to wear long trousers. Enjoy.

Yes, it really is that good. :)

Or, as mentioned, you could try the mint4win feature. Just burn the disk and pop it into the drive and you are able to install/uninstall it as you would any other application so you don't even have to change your existing Windows install.

Linux developers are making it real easy to get your hands dirty these days. :)

Slashiem,

Just use mintinstall or synaptic and search for wine and it will find the version you need and you can install from there. Run 'configure' wine before attempting to run any windows apps to set it up how you feel it would best suit.

Why bother with uTorrent, Transmission is already included.

There is a 64bit version but it usually runs a liitle bit behind the i386 release. They are working n it at the moment and it will be out very shortly, keep an eye on the LinuxMint website for announcements.

If you are using an Ubuntu based distro (like Mint) installing the 'MS Core Fonts' or 'restricted' extras package will install a lot of what you need. In Ubuntu choose Add/Remove programs from the Applications menu and select 'All available applications' from the drop down and then search for fonts or restricted (this option also installs a shed load of codecs and flash etc.).

Also there is a setting under desktop setting for rendering such as smooting for LCDs that really makes a big difference.

If you have a need for a specific font and you know its name you could try a little command-line wizardry that might work, type this into terminal:

sudo apt-get install ttf-"NAME OF FONT" (omitting the quotations and inserting name of font)
'enter password' and let her do her thing

:)

Essentially yes, some are faster than others. KDE and Gnome are the big boys and have the most features. XFCE is lighter on resources and can be faster and is a good balance between functionality and speed. Others such as Fluxbox, Openbox or IceWM offer a different interface model but are lightening fast! There are other managers in the uber geeky or specialist fields, some very scary. Of course, nothing beats the speed and functionality of the terminal. ;)

I have gone back to plain old Ubuntu for the time being. It's dirty and brown but damn it is good. I am eagerly waiting the release of LinuxMint KDE 4.2 which I anticipate will be awesome. :)

Firewall is included out of the box with Mint but you need to enable it, from under Administration. You certainly don't need av. :)
