In other Messi news: He thinks that Jonas Gutierrez is as good as anyone in the PL and that Newcastle could finish in the top 6 this season!
Between this and Gerrard saying that Joe Cole is as good as Messi I do wonder if footballers know anything about the game they play?!

Yes they do.

Former France star Zinedine Zidane: I regret not playing with Manchester United star Paul Scholes

Legendary midfielder believes Englishman is in 'class of his own'

Zinedine Zidane admits that one of the biggest regrets of his career is not getting the chance to play with Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes.

England manager Fabio Capello is going to try and tempt the 35-year-old to come out of his six-year international retirement to join the Three Lions for Euro 2012 after failing to get the Red Devils star to return for the World Cup this summer.

Zidane praised Scholes as one of his the finest players that he competed against in his career, and states that he laments not being able to play alongside the Englishman.

“It’s only natural to want to select your best players and there is no doubt for me that Paul Scholes is still in a class of his own,” Zidane told The Mirror.

“He’s almost untouchable in what he does. I never tire of watching him play. You rarely come across the complete footballer, but Scholes is as close to it as you can get.

“One of my regrets is that the opportunity to play alongside him never presented itself during my career.”

The France legend praised Scholes for the way in which he made it difficult for other players on the pitch.

“He was an extremely tough opponent to play against. You didn’t get any time on the ball when he was around. He would close you down and make your life terribly uncomfortable.

“He is the type of player you want on your side, not in opposition because he could do so much damage.

“He is very gifted. He makes the game look easy because he’s so much natural ability.”

Scholes has stated that he regrets not joining England in South Africa, but Zidane, who returned from retirement to lead France to the 2006 World Cup final, believes that the Englishman must not think about that now.

“Life is full of regrets, but it doesn’t pay to look back.

“When I returned I was given lots of time to consider my position. I’m not sure he was afforded the same luxury.”

I remember in Euro 2004, when we had France in the group stages and they played us (most notably scoring 2 very late goals with Zidane's cheeky penalty), the man they were most afraid of was Paul Scholes. Again at the time it was Zidane singing his praises.

Giggs, Scholes and Neville go down as the Man Utd legends of this generation.

Cesc would have been watching crying in his cup of tea wondering 'what could have been'.

Also highlights the overly cautious approach of Wenger. Here we have players who played in every game in the world cup, being used in what is essentially a friendly.

he is still an important player for Man UTD.
and for Zidane to say Scholesy is the equal to him is a big compliment, but we knew this already :D
imho he is still as good as Gerard or Lampard, but in his day, they would not have got near him.
Scholsey and Giggs are legends :D

i think jonas is a very very good player and one of the better left wingers in the pl. im surprised no one signed him up when newcastle were relegated

scholes is a holding midfielder who can play a decent pass.

zidane was 1 of the best if not the best attacking midfielder in the world. they both play the opposite role from each other. zidane had flair and skill. scholes has aggression and grit.

also i have never heard zidane saying a player was crap. he gives praise to everyone.

Scholes has played a deep playmaker role for a few years now but was always an AM who was known for his darting runs into the box.

Please see 96 - 06 for the best bits.

You, I have now realised know nothing about football and from what I can gather have only watched for a few years and won a few bets and is now our very own pundit.

Scholes a holding midfield player? I mean seriously, he played the majority of his career alongside Keane and you think Scholes is a holding midfield player?

If Henry played a game, or two season at right back, he'd still be a striker/left winger.

Scholes was and still is one of the worlds best attacking midfielders, you can tell the difference between a defensive midfielder and an attacking midfielder, a defensive midfielder can tackle, which instantly rules Scholes out, an attacking midfield scores goals, takes several shots a game, and half of the games attacks will flow through him, with him spraying passes to strikers, wingers, in and around the box and in behind the defence.

The only reason Scholes had been playing slightly deeper is frankly the complete lack of a fit DM at Utd. When Fletcher wasn't playing much it was him, Carrick or Anderson and Scholes almost always dropped the deepest when played with Carrick or Anderson(simply because they are completely hopeless defensively).

Scholes is all about skill and flair, Cesc is one of the best attacking midfielders in the world today, his game isn't about flicks and cruyff turns, its about incredibly skilled passing trying to make killer passes for strikers to finish, thats Scholes down to a tee.

Opposite positions, what rubbish, they played the EXACT same position, they simply had two different methods of achieving the same goals. Scholes will do a simple turn or a 1/2 to get out of a tight situation, Zidane would do a fancier turn, neither were very high scoring players, boths main game was passing to setup others. Scholes and Zidane are two of the best in that position in the game, ever.

Zidane then passed the crack pipe back to Phil Mitchell.

Fixed :)

Aslong as Lionel is not injured for large periods of a season like he was a couple of seasons back, You get the feeling he will win all the individual awards every season.
Scary when you think he's only 23.

By far the best player in the world, The only one remotely close to him is Ronaldo.
