List of games that use more than 4 cores or multithreading?

I was surprised to find last week when I swapped out my 4770k which is 4 core/8threads and 16gb 2400mhz ddr3 ram to my new 3700x and 32gb 4100mhz ram that I can now play F1 2020 at 1440p without stuttering with my rx480 8gb. It wasn't really bad before but enough to be off putting when in breaking zones and turning into corners so had to drop to 1080p on ultra. Didn't seem to matter what graphics settings on 1440p it stuttered. Now max settings on 1440p and it's ok. Not super fast but doing around 45 to 50 FPS average.

It's not that ancient though, and worth revisiting. My post remained un-replied to for over 2.5 years until now but I still think it is valid - I took a look at brand new game Cyberpunk core scaling here: https://overclock3d.net/reviews/sof...n_hex_edit_tested_-_boosted_amd_performance/1
What you can see based on the hex edited results is that the hex core cpu is extremely competitive compared to even 16c32t.

That's an interesting chart.

To my eyes that's showing us possibly two things -
1. Cyberpunk only really scales to six cores/is optimised for six cores
2. The frame-rate is GPU bound by the 3070, so after a certain point more CPU oomph isn't important.

Both could be true, and even if only the second one is true it doesn't mean that a hex core is a bad idea, because the bottleneck is somewhere else for the foreseeable future.

My post that I took back above was saying that I think beyond a certain point developers (and I am one and I do this) target an arbitrary level of parallelism, rather than a specific core count. When that's done successfully, things tend to just scale to use available cores. That's hard in something that needs guarantees of responsiveness etc, like games, much easier in batch processing, but we will get there. Even then it doesn't mean more cores = more frames, because the GPU is the bigger factor (which is why people have been able to get away with Sandy Bridge i5s for so long).

I would be interested to see another chart using a 3080 and a 3090, with the various core counts, to see if the bottleneck moves at all and 8C/16T is the levelling off point. Comparing the two would give us more of a hint as to what's going on.

Fair point about 3070 being a potential bottleneck, although at 1080p you'd hope it's not too extreme. I'd imagine most people with better cards than 3070 (which basically means 2080ti/3080/6800xt or better) want to be playing at higher resolution than 1080p. It's also just one game however and I'm sure there are others where 8c gives more of an advantage.

I'm trying to see if there is value in upgrading my CPU from a gaming standpoint.

What games would actually significantly benefit from more than 4cores 4thread running at 4.7ghz?

Are they few and far between? What about farcry 5 for example. That's a new game.

any multiplayer game, any MMO and usually any other game today.
I been running 6 core cpus for 4 generations now.
I game, have twitch on and encode a video now and then.
Its not just for gaming but with everything else also which many forgets.

My comment was nearly 3 years old! LOL
