Been playing about with mine today and removed the standard Shuttle cooling.
Basically ive rigged up a Akasa heatsink to a custom made mount [thanks to the lads at Lola where i work] onto the Shuttle cpu mount.

Previous temps were 44c idle and 58c underload. The cpu according to Coretemp is now idling at 33c @ 2.67GHZ.Load Temps are still in the 50s but i have the fan set to only kick in at 55c.

Anyone else modded the cooling[other than water] on a Shuttle?

I'm toying with the idea of fitting an external 80 to 120mm fan convertor on the PS of my SD37P2, and then fitting a quiet 120mm externally.

I'm impressed by your improvements in temps, the ICE unit is supposed to be quite efficient.

The ICE Unit is a good piece of kit tbh although the fan shroud mounted internally mucks up airflow considerably. There is more room in the case now which no doubt contributes to the temp drop.

Would like to see some pictures of your modding to the SD37 when you get it done.

No problems, we all like showing off our shiny bits.

Piccies will be posted soon hopefully.

BTW, feel free to show off your new heatsink arrangement.

you'll love to see what i've done to shuttles :D

project 1: cool a shuttle using a 120mm fan

looking at ideas on how to arrange the internals, only a single 120mm fan was going to be used to cool the xp120, 9600xt and psu.

this idea was dismissed when i couldn't get the right cabling that i was after without spending a fortune.

instead i found a psu modded with 14db fans, so i've butchered the graphics card instead.

ice heatsink modified to fit on a 9600xt

the card sitting in the shuttle, VERY tight fit

otherwise its just a standard sb75g2 on the outside :)

ive done all sorts over the years with my shuttles (some of you may remember my crazy 120mm delta mod :)) though they dont quite compare to steeps' ideas :)

all the items in the list dropped my temps by either a few degrees or more

list off the top of my head (may be worth noting that these probs wont work too well in the newer P type chassis, and were all done in the G type):

80mm (or 92 depending on model) on the inside and outside in a push pull config (works better with the grill cut out)

same as above but with a 120mm on the outside

just a 120mm on the outside sucking heat away from the ICE (this works better if the grill has been cut out)

120mm on the inside (dependant on model) sucking heat from the ICE and pushing it towards the front of the case. 80mm wedged inbetween case ande graphics card on the side to blow the warm air out. this one really only works in the G type chassis and only if your using a g-card such as a 9800XT or X800 or nvidia equivelants due to the length

Delta mod. moved the psu closer to the front so i could accomadate a Delta EHE 190cfm on the inside of the case sucking air away from the ICE and blowing it to the front of the case. all held in place with Meccano :) 2500-m idled at like 28 degrees when it was on 12v but my god the noise in such a confined space lol i'll get some pics up of this one later when im done at work

I found that in the old days I could just add a few 60mm fans tied together and prop up the front of the case (above CD) and that would drop temps by about 10C, but downside was the noise.

The next thing I tried was the SilentStream water cooler designed for SFF, turned out to be noisy and not much better than the standard ICE system

Next thing I tried was to add a nice quiet 80mm fan inside and a quiet 120mm outside, been running this with two Akasa Amber fans 80mm & 120mm and removed all fan grills, also running a Zalman Gold Northbridge cooler, an Artic Silver 5 on all heatsinks. using Speedfan to control the fans, currently idles at 35-39C at 5% with just the 120, fans at full speed and under load it runs at around 40-50C but still silent (apart from PSU fan).
