I've been embracing even before the expression "portable apps" was invented. We're looking at 2004 here. What I used to do was install everything conventionally, copy the individual programs folders to another PC and see if they ran by themselves. Some worked and some didn't. Those that did work include Ccleaner, Gspot, Ghost Explorer, The Font Thing and my DMX lighting software. Of course, since portable apps have been invented, I have added the likes of Firefox and Winamp to the list, and will soon hopefully add Openoffice.org.
It makes sense though doesn't it? Back in the 1980s, you insert your 5.25" floppy and the program loads up within seconds, without having to install it first. Now it's the same, except that it's on a stick (or in my case, on a 7200rpm external hard drive).
