Yesterday I was playing C&C generals when the screen started going crazy, figured it must have just been because the graphics card was overheating (seeing as its a AMD laptop it gets increadibly hot), so left it an hour then tried again, same problem.

After that i blew out as much dust i could from the 50mm fans, and when trying to blow dust out the exhaust from the graphics card i found a dead moth.... fully stuck under the plastic casing, pulled it out with a pair of tweezers and everything worked fine.

The phrase "bug" was coined by Grace Hopper, who found a moth blocking the cogs in one of the earliest computers.

Have you ever had a animal related computer breakdown ? any intresting stories ?

And (as a side question) does anyone know if overclockers do student discount ? always worth asking.

Had a daddylonglegs fly into the chipset cooler on a mobo once, the fan had got stupidly noisey, and i didnt know why until i removed it for cleaning and found several legs and wings...

Suffice to say, once it was cleaned the noise drastically reduced.

Not sure about student discount, i very much doubt it though..

Best computer failure I've seen personally was about 3yrs ago. A mate of mine had a gigabyte nforce 2 mobo, and had all his components built up outside his case for overclocking purposes.

We were messing with his hardware one night and my mate was standing around drinking coffee whilst I played with his pc settings. From nowhere he sneezed and a blob of snot flew through the air (about 6ft) and landed smack bang on his mobo (about 1" from the cpu socket) :p Instant powerdown, never to boot again :(

We laugh about it now but it wasn't funny at the time.....well....ok maybe it was a little funny at the time :p

Harsh luck lol, though hilarious :P
Daddy long legs are one of those animals i really hate, why do they have to be long and spindly ?

Who me ? Nah, i wouldnt kill those long legged freaks, theres more than i could ever kill where i live ! (in a woods  )

A couple of months ago, I was playing away on my PC, noticed this daddy-long-legs skittering about above me.

Next thing I know, it disappears down the wall behind my PC. Never thought anything of it.

I came to clean out the PC a couple of weeks later, and guess what I find lying on my motherboard just below the back case fan? The aforementioned insect. Looked like the fan had sucked it in, smacked it up, and dumped it in the case.

:o

When I lived with the family, back in about 1998, I was working on my sister's PC, and got it working, but never put the side panel back on. She never bothered either. A few months later with no side case, and well, the cat thought it would be a good idea to spray the inside to mark it's territory...never turned on again.

Not that it impaired performance or function, I opened up my case once to find a pencil inside. How it got in I don't know...

Haha, I love it when things like that happen. Something so random that you jsut have no idea how it happened! :P

My mate asked me to fix his PC and there was an eminem album inside there :D

Computer schools people just rip the front of them off and stick loads of junk in there :D

haha, i know they do lolz mainly gum

I did find a nice pen in there once

/nerd

Well that and crisp packets, they reach in thru the drive bays and rip the ram out :D

Ive never done that

In our school they used to put the towers on the floor, all the spair drive bays were broken up in seconds.

And having a option to change the voltage of the PSU whiped out a few computers (and set off a few smoke alarms) too, not smart moves lol.
