It's time to get a new Mac, my >5 year old 24" iMac just isn't cutting it any more and is prone to freezing/crashing/just annoying me.

I can't decide whether to go for a 15" MBP, a 21.5" iMac or go all out on a 27" iMac.

The portability of the MBP would be nice but it's a lot more expensive than the iMac equivalent. I'm not sure I really need the 27" screen, so I'm leaning more towards the 21.5".

The current options are -

  • 21.5" iMac with 3.1ghz quad core i7, 16gb memory & 1tb Fusion - £1,564.80
  • 27" iMac with 3.2ghz quad core i5, 16gb memory & 1tb Fusion - £1,688.40
  • 15" MBP (retina display) with 2.0ghz quad core i7, 16gb memory & 512gb Flash - £1,783.20
I think my thread sounds like I'm leaning towards the 21.5". It's the cheapest and offers the best spec but then having the ability to be portable with the MBP is tempting too (despite the lower spec).

So I'm asking what do you guys think I should do? What would you do?

I'm in the same boat. 2009 iMac. I'm waiting for news on the Mac Mini though. Rumours of end of February. I would like to see a redesign like the Mac Pro got. Imagine an itty bitty Mac Mini tin. I mean, the ODD is gone. NUCs are out. The only thing keeping the size as it is, is the internal PSU. And they can always move to a small brick since the power draw is minimal.

As for 21.5" vs 27". 1440p screen real estate is fantastic. I have a 1440 DGM here that if a new Mac Mini does come out soon, will be plugged into. 1080p on my iMac just don't cut it anymore unless I full screen apps and swipe to change applications.

I fire up Logic every now and then, Photoshop is used a fair bit too. I like to play Sim City which is nigh on impossible on my current iMac too.

You could do all that on an Air or 13 inch pro and just thunderbolt it out to a larger display when you need to. Portability and large screen real estate.

Don't forget the 15" boosts to 3.2 + 3.5 on the cpu, you could have that for travelling, then get a 27" IPS screen for use at home.

Maccy - if you keep an eye on play, they have done bonkers deals in macbook air's over the past year - quite a few of us got them for £699 for the 13" one (usually £999). as a result I use a 27" imac at work and the air at home, perfect combo.

I have had a couple of Retina Macbooks in the previous year, while they are without doubt beautiful - i much prefer the air overall.

No question

15" retina pro. I bought one just before Christmas (my first mac). It's just unreal......gods laptop!

Then in a few months, bag yourself something like the £299 27" Hazro

best of both worlds then

:edit: lol, just read the posts above. Looks like im not the only one saying 15" and 27" monitor

I think I'm going to opt for a mac mini with dual matching displays and a mac book air when its time for my upgrade. Thou my 21" imac don't get much use at home at the moment, my work MBP, home MB and ipads takes a hammering.

I voted the 21" iMac, because it was both cheaper and more powerful. Looking at the results everyone else is stuck between the 27" and the MBP. The 27" screen is amazing however....
