A BLIND flamingo, believed to be among the oldest in the world, has rallied after nearly dying following an alleged attack by teenagers at Adelaide Zoo.

Zoo officials feared the worst and the bird, which is thought to be 80 years old, was listed as critical following the attack yesterday afternoon.

When retrieved by keepers he was unable to stand and looked distressed.

He was found to have serious beak damage, head injuries and bleeding from the left eye.

The flamingo was taken to the animal hospital where it was warmed up and given fluids and anti-inflammatory drugs.

Today it was reported to be responding well to the treatment.

Adelaide Zoo chief executive Chris West said the flamingo was one of only a handful in captivity in Australia and first came to Adelaide in the 1930s.

Strict quarantine regulations made it difficult now for zoos to bring more of the birds into the country.

"He's just an icon, he's the oldest resident of the zoo, he's just a symbol of the beauty of nature,'' Dr West said.

Described as tame and docile, the flamingo was unafraid of humans and had a habit of coming close to the edge of his enclosure.

The attack left zoo officials concerned for the wellbeing of a second flamingo, the only companion for the older bird for more than 50 years.

The younger bird arrived at the zoo in the 1940s.

Police said four teenaged males, aged 17, 18 and 19, had been charged with ill-treatment of an animal.

Two 17-year-olds were bailed to appear in the Youth Court next month while the other two were bailed to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court in February.

All four face a maximum penalty of four years in jail or a $50,000 fine.

Police also want to speak with several people who spoke to zoo staff at the time of the attack.

I would love to see these 4 get the **** bashed out of them

Probably ****ing Bogans:mad:

I love Aussie English - their slang makes me smile all the time - Bogans, Lebs, Galahs - brilliant, so much better than ours - chavs.

Agree it's a disgusting attack. Isn't there some statistic that if you're cruel to animals as a child, you're likely to commit murder in later life...

Yep, remember watching a documentary about it. I also know that the kid who shot an old friends kitten in the head with an air rifle is now in prison for assault. A lack of compassion for animals typically carries over to all living things.

Just goes to show there's little ***** all over the world.

I don't understand why it says maximum punishment, it should say minimum punishment instead, atleast then people would know what the least some little **** is going to get.

How sad...What goes through peoples minds sometimes I do not know.

Culprit 1: "Hey I know, lets go and attack a flamingo"
Culprit 2: "Ahahaha! Yeah! That'd be awesome! ahha, stupid thing"
Culprit 1: "Yeah it will be sooooo funny :D"

Silly, silly children :o

Indeed, probably get half that fine, and half the sentence, if that....but obviously not at the same time.

oooooh I love justice!

Not.

Lebs is short for lebanese. Not sure I'd count it as slang or a word to like :)

Don't think anyone actually uses Galah, 'cept for that old bloke on Home and Away.

Didnt a youngster break into a zoo in Australia a few month's back? Im sure i remember something about the boy only being young (8 i think) and he broke into the reptile part and killed a load of reptiles by bashing them together then fed the dead one's to a croc, he also fed some live one's to the croc as well.

What sort of parents bring there kids up not to respect life.

In my opinion anyone who can harm defencless animals is likely to not have any problems harming baby's or any humans come to that.

is a bogan like a chav or ned?

No.

The term bogan (pronounced /ˈboʊgən/, rhyming with slogan) is Australian and New Zealand English slang, usually pejorative, for a person who is, or is perceived to be, of a lower-class background. According to the stereotype, the speech and mannerisms of "bogans" indicate, poor education, cheap clothing and uncultured upbringing. 'Bogans' usually reside in economically disadvantaged suburbs (often outer metropolitan) or rural areas.

The term is a close regional equivalent to the English term Chav or *****, Scottish term Ned, Irish term Scanger and the North American term White Trash. However the term 'bogan' is occasionally used with some affection in Australia/NZ, whereas those corresponding terms are not.

Wiki.

I'm an Australian both and bred; I lived there for 31 years, and I've lived in the UK for nearly 5 years. I've seen plenty of bogans and chavs in that time. The two are not equivalent, though they do share some similarities.

So the difference is breeding location.

Poor animal :( Can't understand why people want to hurt or kill animals or people for that matter. Really surprised me to learn that in the UK, a wild rabbit is not considered to be a mammal rather its classed as vermin????? Why???? Its a mammal fro goodness sake. S'got all the right bits. If the government fails to protect wildlife, who can?

No.
