Little help with an overclock

It's been 2 years since I overclocked my system so please bare with me.

I am currently running my CPU at 191x20.
My ram is 6GB Patriot Viper DDR3 12800 (1600Mhz) triple channel
Current ram is running at 764Mhz with a 2:8 divider.

I want to get another 6GB so have looked for the same stuff and have found a triple channel kit quite cheap however it is 10666 (1333Mhz). How much of an issue do you think it would be to pair this up with what I have already? I know my current ram is running under its max speed however this new ram (if I get it) will be running above the stated speed. I am in 2 minds about picking this kit. Would it be better to get the £30 Kingston kit in this weeks only offer as it is rated the same as my current patriot?

Hi, l was in the same position but after reading a few threads. l went for Corsair Vengeance 12GB[3x4GB] ram and have my 6GB of ram spare.

That's £90. I'm not going to spend that on what I will probably only notice as placebo
The 6GB slower stuff I can get is £15
The stuff in this week only is £30.

Hi again, do you need 12GB of ram? I do as my PC gets used for other things apart from gaming + l did not pay £90 for my 12GB ram.

I have seen it fill close to the 6GB on occasions and I'd really like to turn off my page file as it's probably shortening the life of my SSD quite a bit. I just don't want to spend too much in the process. I mainly use my PC for games and at 2560x1440 I know more ram will be used. I do sometimes encode 1080p movies + use photoshop. I doubt I will use more then 6GB often, but for £15 - £30 I can't ignore it.

I also went the 3x4gb config, though tbf. The kingston kit was £40.00 cheaper than what it is now. Personally id opt for 6gb of the kingston with the same timings as what you have, less fiddling about with settings to get it running. In my other x58 rig, ive succesfully mixed ocz reaper and corsair xms3, simply slackened the timings of the reaper to match the corsair. Albeit though, both are 1600mhz kits. 6x2gb on that rig needs a bit more qpi voltage than the 3x4 config in the rig in sig.

Cheers.

USB 3 does 5Gbit/s which is kind of like SATA 2.66. Fast enough for a page file.

You have a point there.

Another example though, last night I played BF3 for a good 4 hours, when I finally quit I found my aero desktop had reverted to the old horrible one with a bubble popping up informing me my system was low on memory and had reverted to basic desktop.

Dave, you can set windows to disable aero when launching the game, helps cut down vram usage as well. Once you quit the game, aero will switch on again.

It's never happened until BF3 and Nexuiz.
They both use a lot of ram. I dont think it happened until I got the bigger monitor either. Didn't realise you could set windows to do that but tbh windows 7 only uses 130MB vram with areo on and 68MB with it off so i doubt that'll made a difference.

On the settings im using in bf3, i can get pretty close to the limit off my gpu vram, 1920x1200 res. I see your on 2560x1440, how does 470 sli cope with that? Prior to my current 12gb kit, i was running the reaper 6gb kit in this rig, had no problems with system ram running short, just picked up 12gb as it was cheap.

trouble is with the 4gb sticks on x58 they tend to be less stable than 2gb sticks, ideally you wanna look around for another 6gb kit of the same patriot ram to add to your current 6gb

BF3 uses any vram it can find even if it doesn't actually need it.
I was getting the odd stutter with it maxed out even thought fps was solid. Dropping the MSAA cured it so it now runs perfectly maxed out but with only post AA removing those nasty jaggies. Gets over 60fps now but I vsync it, very rarely see drops, only the odd one when in a massive cloud of smoke but it seems to remain above 50 even then :)

That's what I'm trying to do but I'm not having any luck finding the Patriot Viper 6GB kit. It was popular back when I bought it because it was even used in the OCUK pre overclocked i7 bundles. I am considering buying the Kingston kit (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-109-KS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1389) to go with my current kit but even though the timings are similar it is showing a higher voltage requirement so am unsure.
