Yep it could turn out like the Wii, lots of hype but fails to deliver :(

Thing is, unlike games like GTA4, this game has had a lot of public playtime, very little has been kept secret. For so many people to like it after trying it i hope that will go some way towards being evidence of it actually being a fantastic game. On the flip side however, the aforementioned Wii also got plenty of public playtime before it's release and also received favorable feedback...

Basically my above post explained, solved and discussed absolutely nothing worthy of note, sorry about that.

Didn't someone ask that about GTA4? :p

Exactly, somes games look good but when you get to playing it, it can turn out to be far from what you was expecting.

I hope i'm wrong and it's amazing, but i really can't see people playing this for more than a few months at maximum.

I just know that this is a game that I will get at least 100 hours out of.

The thing is, GTA4 had to live up to the hype and be better than the other GTA games that came before it. LBP is the first game of its kind and has nothing else to compare it to.

How can this game NOT live up to the hype?

Quite easily if it turns out to be;

a) Boring
b) Frustrating
c) Repetitive
d) Gimmicky

I'll be buying it, purely because so many people think it will be amazing. I've still yet to quite see why though, so my judgement is being heavily reserved.

Quite easily if it turns out to be;

a) Boring - All depends on how interesting the level creator makes it.
b) Frustrating - Again, down to level design
c) Repetitive - Do I need to say it again? :p
d) Gimmicky - There is no reason why this can't be a game to keep coming back to. It all comes down to how good the users make it.

All i can say about LBP is that every review, hands on, preview from just about every gaming site and the general public have all said it is an amazing game. GTA4 never had so much positive feed back, nor i don't think MGS4 did, its a game i think not everyone will like or appreciate as it doesn't involve big space marines shooting things (all though it could do lol). Im kinda sure that this could last you for months or years, but like all games its only until the next big thing comes along. I think it will be a game you will come back to on a regular basis to try out new levels/ things etc, but not constantly play for months on end.

What makes me so hopeful of this game is thinking back to half life 1 on the PC. Due to the ease of level design and modding the game just kept getting recreated with new ideas coming in left right and center, LBP looks like its going a little way towards recapturing and empowering the imagination of the users unlike todays standard games which follow the format of:

create a new idea/gimmick
replicate gimmick throughout the game
market as groundbreaking

At least this way, whenever someone has a great idea they can chuck it out to the masses to see whether its popular or not. You never know, a user created level might give birth to a whole new genre one day.

(I hope).

And what about the core game that you get out of the box? Nevermind relying on user generated content.

(I know some will say that is the point, but with the hype it's getting it should be 'amazing' as it is)

As far as I'm concerned, there is no single player. To me, this will be a Warhawk like online only game.

Fair enough, I'm the complete opposite though. I probably wouldn't even contemplate playing this game online.

Do you not think cooping this game with 3 other mates either locally or over the net is a potentially fantastic bit of fun? (assuming the supplied levels design is up to scratch) I just find that hard to believe personally i just assumed everyone preferred playing games with their mates, fair play if you don't, it's just something i had never really considered.

I really can't believe that such a game can last people for months/years. Yes it looks fun but tbh how different can it get? you might get 10 or so unique levels but i just can't see there beeing enough to keep the majority of people coming back for months/years.

I will be buying it upon release but from what i've seen of it i don't believe it has enough variety to keep people coming back to it once a few months have passed.

In that case, I'm not sure it will deliver, unfortunately.

Maybe if you like designing levels then trying them out.

I spent a lot of time doing that in Tony Hawk 2. :)

From Edge magazine
It’s reassuring to see how friendly Create is, but the real surprise turns out to be Play’s pre-made stages. It’s easy to assume that the levels that ship with the game will be little more than tutorials – what we discovered, however, playing through an Indian-themed stage with Healey, was that even if this wasn’t a genre-shifting creative tool, it would still be a devastatingly effective 2D platformer out of the box.

While the aesthetic is unmistakably its own, the mixture of precision jumping, simple physics and the intricate clutters of moving platforms is strongly evocative of 16bit gaming. There’s ingenuity and humour on display everywhere, with risky secret routes to be uncovered, jumble-sale landslides to trigger and an entire sequence that plays out on the back of a mechanical elephant which advances across a bed of flames. Everywhere, the handicraft style combines with the chunky mechanics to create platforming that feels fresh yet traditional. With fairly low expectations for this aspect of the game, it’s a revelation to come away with the sense that we’ve just played through some of the purest 2D design we’ve seen since Super Mario World. Working above a bathroom store clearly does wonders for your creative motivation.

Being compared to probably the best platform game ever is no bad thing, especially from Edge who are not exactly the easiest to please.

I spent a lot of time doing that in Tony Hawk 2. :)

Those were the days.
