When my housemates aren't here I sometimes get that. Mainly due to the house creaking and my parents house doesn't. I know I shouldn't even consider something weird is going on but in the back of my mind I think "there shouldn't be any noise, I'm alone". If I was always on my own I would probably get used to it.
I think you should be more afraid when you live with someone else rather than alone. With another person in the house the threat is already present, and you simply never know....
And remember the dark cannot hurt you, it is just the things that reside in it that are murderous!
I live in a small flat though. I imagine if you lived in a large mansion full of creaking pipes and floorboards then it could get a bit spooky at times.
Well there's an argument that you've evolved to afraid of the dark. Mainly because people who weren't scared of the dark, historically, have all been eaten by bears
The dark at my place doesn't bother me in the slightest, never really has. One oddity I will offer up though is that I find it hard to sleep in a room that's completely pitch dark. It's not cos I'm scared of the dark (honest!) I just find it takes me ages to get to sleep. At my place I tend to leave the landing light on simply to make it easier to sleep. Never really thought about that that much.
Somebody pointed out that I have blackout blinds on my flat now, whereas previously I didn't, and living in central London it never really gets totally dark... I guess you get used to stuff.
I just got to a point in the story where it was describing how the hero's lover was going to be tortured. They were describing a special full face helmet that was to be filled with rats. Just as the author started planting the notion that the rats either went in through the eye sockets or chewed through the cheeks I heard something in the corner of the room.
Anyway I carried on reading, but sounds got louder.
I watched the exorcist alone when i was living in my parents house. They were away for the weekend.Don't know why the hell i put it on, it was possibly the scariest night of my life.I live by myself at the moment and don't really get scared especially after buying two kittens to keep me company!
What really is scary is when you have a thing called a night terror our something like that. Basically it's when you wake up consciously but your body is paralysed because it still thinks it's dreaming. (safety mechanism) You hallucinate when having these and you feel like someone is pinning you down. That is ducking fear and your helpless which is the worst thing.
What timing for this thread. I was ok for the first 5 years I've lived in this house, but now I'm more cautious. This is because this very week, someone went into my garden and sheds and nicked all of my stick-in-the-ground solar lights. It's not the money that bothers me as they're unlikely to be re-sellable, but it's the violation my of privacy that gets me.
