So windows 10 doesn't include windows media centre now and it's officially dead.

What other software is there?

I couldn't figure out how to get xbmc working,
But there must be something else simple and elegant out there, what does everyone use?
Or are those of us using windows media centre stuffed.

Sky+HD, Virgin Media TiVo, or a FreeviewHD Recorder.

I don't understand why anyone would want to put TV through a PC any more?

For extra stuff such as playing films, media streaming from a NAS box if you don't want to pay a VM or Sky sub and have all in one device sitting under the TV.

I use DVB Viewer on mine, best thing I did since I dumped the TiVo box years ago.

One box instead of many.

None if those suggestions dies everything. Why would I keep wanting to switch between boxes, when atm all I do is switch between apps.

I use NextPVR for scheduling all my recordings and then Kodi (XBMC) for playing them. Kodi has a live TV plugin for NextPVR (and lots of other PVR clients) so you can schedule recordings, watch live TV straight from it. For viewing recordings I just pointed Kodi at my recordings folder where the raw video file are rather than using the plugin mind.

Here's how to enable the live TV plugin.

Switching between boxes takes 1 press of 1 button for me.

Its more effort to switch apps on my FireTV than it is to swap from anything on that to Sky and back.

Using a Windows PC as a PVR or TV Player is such an out dated thing now. Even more so if your using it for DVB given that the TV your plugging it into probably has a Freeview turner built in!

Think about it, if Microsoft are killing Media Centre and there are no decent alternatives, doesn't that suggest the technology is a bit redundant :p

Rofl. why would I want extra remote, extra box, let alone an extra box that costs hundreds, for zero reason and makes life harder.

For a start those boxes cost a lot.
Then with sky box, don't know about virgin. You have to buy a £25 card to watch freest, then if you record it's something like a £5 per month subscription.

Just because I don't know if there's alternative software, doesn't mean there isn't. I've just always used media centre.as it works flawlessly out if the box.

And htpc is so much better than virgin/skybox.

Even if TV had built in freest then I wouldn't use it, that still requires changing devices and extra remote, for no benefit and unlikely to have recording features built in.

Down stairs is still many devices and it's a rubbish set up. All in one set ups are far better.

You don't need a PC for this.

So you built your HTPC for free? :p

Harmony remote + boxes designed to do the job. Simple. No need for all this 'multiple remotes' rubbish.

I struggled with a Media Centre PC for years until I gave up, got Sky+, a BluRay Player and an XBMC machine (now a FireTV) and have never looked back.

Actually, I should probably sell that Media PC. Its got some expensive low profile TV tuners and graphics cards in it which some fool still persisting with MCE might buy :p

Off course not, but I would still need a htpc as no box does everything I want.
So why spend two or three times as much for a worse set up,

I have a harmony remote and it's still rubbish compared to a mini keyboard and htpc.
Have fun searching youtube, amazon, Netflix and other services without a full keyboard.

Amazon Prime, Netflix, Plex, Kodi, etc = FireTV (£65)
BluRay, DVD = BluRay Player (£30)
PVR = Freeview Recorder (£100) [Or Sky+/TiVo if you have it]
Harmony Remote (£50)
Bluetooth Keyboard (£20)

Done.

£170 done, with no switching. Actually cheaper than that these days. And your setep still doesn't play iTunes and Xbox videos.

And no you cannot really use sky box as I've already said.
