Reds apologise for cowardly fans
Copyright Press Association Ltd. Sunday, 19 March 2006

Liverpool have apologised to Manchester United for the behaviour of their fans during last month's highly-charged FA Cup tie at Anfield.

Liverpool stadium and operations manager Ged Poynton has written to United admitting standards of behaviour had "fallen short" of that expected.

Poynton added in the News of the World: "We hold our hands up as a club. We deplore what certain fans have done. I use the word coward very reservedly but I class anyone who wants to throw a coin or something else when they are leaving as cowards."

The club and Merseyside Police have carried out an investigation after a number of incidents where United fans at the Anfield Road end were attacked by home supporters. There was one incident of human excrement being thrown towards United supporters as well as coins and food being aimed in their direction.

Poynton added: "I am ashamed to admit in one case excrement was thrown. How low can you get? We did what we could, we tried to brush people down and compensate those involved."

Tensions between the rivals had been running higher than usual going into the February 18 match - won 1-0 by Liverpool - after a controversial end to a Premiership encounter between the sides the previous month.

United's Gary Neville had run to celebrate in front of Liverpool fans after Rio Ferdinand headed a later winner at Old Trafford.

The cup tie was also marred by a section of home fans taunting United's Alan Smith after breaking his leg late in the match.

I know there was quite a lot of debate as to what exactly had happened but fair play to them for coming out and apologising. At the end of the day it's not representative of most liverpool fans at all but excrement throwing is pretty nasty.

Im still waiting for my apology from Manchester Police and Man United's stadium manager for their lack of protection offered to Liverpool fans at each of the last Manchester United vs Liverpool matches at Old Trafford for the last 19 years. Each time I have been I have been spat at, had missiles of some description thrown and and been called a thieving murdering ****** by Man United fans.

Fair play to Ged for apologising for the poor behaviour of a minority of Liverpool fans. They were out of order for the poo-flinging. However, I doubt any of this would have come to light if Man United had won.

Give it a rest, your fans did bad. Of course it's not every 'pool fan but there's no point trying to alleviate that responsibility by having a go at the other clubs fans in return. If you had an issue then you know where to report it. Otherwise take it on the chin and just accept that in this instance it wasn't anyone else being out of order.

That is my point exactly. Liverpool fans wouldn't report it, we have had it from your lot at Old Trafford for the last god knows how many years and just dealt with it our own way...by taking it on the chin. This year we had bottles, coins, spit and physical attacks from Man United fans at us after we had been beaten at Old Trafford. Anyone report it? No.

Manchester United fans didn't take this on the chin. They were hurt by being knocked out of the FA cup and had to get revenge somehow. How? By reporting some bad behaviour of a minority of Liverpool fans.

Like I said, I am not condoning the behaviour of those that did what they did. All I am saying is that if the result had been different, I doubt the reports would have been made.

So it's ok if it goes unreported then? You know what do next time.

Where did I say it was okay? I actually condemed the actions of fellow Liverpool supporters.

What I did say was that the incidents were only brought to everyones attention because of the fact Man United got beat. And I stand by that. Nobody likes being beaten, especially by your most bitter rivals. Incidents like that(apart from the poo-flinging) go on every week.

Maybe I am one of a dying breed of old school football supporters, but I would never grass on other fans for doing me over in some way.

Well if you didn't report anything why are you expecting an apology?

Rubbish, if it was Man Utd fans, it would have been all over the papers. Revenge... I don't think so, they would have reported it regardless of the result. Jez...petty or what.

Ok, so now you are definitely implying that you deem it unworthy of reporting, hence acceptable and expected to some degree from opposition fans. So why are you demanding an apology? Bit of a schoolground mindset regarding 'getting one over' too I must say.

If someone threw a coin or any kind of crap ( ) at me in a public place where I have payed entry, I'd want action to be taken. I'd much prefer punching the culprit in the face myself, but as I can't I'd report it.

I think it is more petty reporting it and I totally disagree with you about the motive. If Man United had won, you could have tipped a hundredweight of horse manure on thier fans and they wouldn't have cared. The result matters, not the contents of someones bowels.

Yes, I agree it is unworthy of a report. No I do not condone it. Missiles, spitting, excrement etc has no place in football. A bit of friendly banter is as far as I will go, but if someone throws a coin at me....it is going back with interest!

In terms of 'demanding an apology' that was more tongue in cheek. Id love Fergie to phone me up personally and apologise for winning the title all those years but it aint gonna happen. That's how serious my apology request was :)

I'd also love an apology from Ferguson, one for playing Fletcher in any game ever and another for changing tactics and employing Queiroz. Well I can dream.... :)

'Dear F.A. please tell Mr. Neville off for making a funny face at us when we'd just conceeded a goal.'
Signed Mr Coin Thrower himself J.C

'Dear F.A. please give us all a knighthood.'
Mr Gizzagong R.P

Liverpool and Liverpool fans I agree have a track record of taking things on the chin and not whinging about anything.

i was sat in the lower centenery for the game.

needless to say it took all of about 20 chants from 6000 horrible, horrible supporters, men, women and kids alike, about hillsborough, heysel, michael shields, and 'where's your famous munich song?' before there was a response from a small minority of 'are you watching geordie best' and a few plane gestures.

the boring london press decide to report about the alan smith chant, but they fail to acknowledge that after everyone realised the injury was serious, he was applauded off by most of the stadium.

JEALOUSY.

edit: speaking of knighthoods, alex whisky nose ferguson, least deserved knighthood EVA.
