Living with GF - Uni Student

... oh and like said above, previously if she was living in a student only house she will have paid no council tax, but with living with you it is only a 25% discount rather than 50% that you may expect

This is wrong, partners are only treated as such if you're married or the student is over 25.

EDIT: My boyfriend worked for a year before doing his masters and I still had to claim dependency on my parents.

Meh, I'm 27. No need to say who you are living with at all. For all they know, you GF could just be a house-mate (or indeed another student).

just throwing it in. You're income isn't a problem. As she's not income assessed in the first place then it doesn't matter. These things only come into play if you start trying to rock JSA

Cheers everyone - just wanted to make sure. I know about the 75% council tax thing coz i've lived alone before. Where does she get the exempt form from though so i'm still classed as living alone?

Depends from uni to uni I'd imagine. Either the registry or teaching office probably. We get one at the start of every academic year.

Sorry to bump a ridiculously old thread, but I'm starting my masters in September and will be living with my girlfriend (potentially fiancée...). Council tax wise, is it cheaper to get a 1 bedroom place or 2? We're both under 25....

Doesn't make a difference as it is all down to the council tax band that it is in. If they are the same band then it will be the same cost regardless.

Makes no difference if she was livin with u or other students, slightly daft question

Was thinking this but wanted to check after seeing the 'I would suggest getting a two bed and stating she is a lodger and pay the tax on the rent you would receive as if this were true to keep them off the scent.' post before. Cheers
