Last night I was woken at about 3am by thunder. I finally woke up enough to realise that thunder is caused by lightning I decided to turn off and unplug my PC/TFT etc. Just in time - there was a really close flash and all the power went off. So I went back to bed....

Woke up this morning to realise that whilst my PC was fine my TV had been killed.

It is a 6 year old 32" widescreen CRT Philips - nothing really special just a bog standard 50Hz flatscreen CRT TV.

Here is the good bit - I am assuming that this is covered by my contantes policy which means that this is the best chance for a long time to persuade my wife that a HD-TFT TV is the way forwards - but which one !

I've got up to about £1000 to spend (any more and my wife not be happy).

So which one ? The Toshiba 32WL66 seems to get good reviews, but are there better deals ?

We also have a 9 month old daughter so an enclosed stand for the DVD/HD recorder would be a good idea !

im getting paranoid about lighting+electrincs=hot, broken silicon, I MUST by a surge protecting multi socket fast. The toshiba is ment to be very good, its cheap too and has 2 hdmis, and hdmi will be important.

I would check with your insurance company first before getting your hopes up, as some consider lightening an act of God and don't pay.

Then sue the church ;)

If you do get the money have a look at the new samsungs

Ive just picked up a Toshiba 32WLT66 which is almost the same as the 32WL66 but it has the built in freeview and cam slot(top up tv)and black ... Paid less than £800 for it brand new.The 32WL66 is usually around £100 cheaper. Both are excellent tellys ;)

Thing is we dont get any freeview signal so there seems little point in paying the extra for the integrated tuner.

Will the insurance company simply give us a cheque or will they deliver a new TV ?

I've Surge Protectors on Everything!... including my Phone/Broadband!... I'm taking noooooooo chances!

i asked about this a while back when i was worried my TV had gone during a lightenning strike

they did cover it, but would initially expect you to take it to the waranty center, to see if it could be repaired

They have said that they will need to send around someone to make sure that it is "beyond economic repair".

Once that has been done they will cough up a cheque for what a brand new 32" CRT flatscren TV would cost (approx £290).

So just waiting for the go/no go on the new TV.....

Looks like the 32" Tosh is next on the list hopefully.
