Evening,

I want to have a networked hard-disk available for backups and as a source for a few media files to play on a TV elsewhere in the house. I don't need the redundancy of a full NAS, nor the multi-streaming ability of a media centre.

Cheap and cheerful is the aim!

Would this set-up work?

1. 4K Fire stick with Plex
  • Possibly via an OTC for keyboard etc.
2. External HD connected to a router and mapped
  • Connected using a USB to ethernet connector
Suspect i am missing something obvious here, but hints and tips welcome!

Yep would work fine, before my NAS, I had a USB hard drive plugged into my BT router, mapped the drive and worked fine with multiple Fire TV apps.

I had the benefit of the BT Hub having a usb socket and supporting hard drives out the box

I've tried this be aware that usb 3 drives can and do cause issues if you are connecting on 5ghz band not all have appropriate shielding. Drove me mad and I gave up doing the same as one day it would work the next it wouldn't.

If you're wanting to use Plex where is the Plex server running in this scenario?

Drives connected to routers tend to have terrible performance.
