HI All

Besides my internal drive(80Gig) which has Windows XP on it,I have a 320 Gig External drive which I use to backup important files.

Can I load/run games on the External drive,or do they have to be installed and run from the drive with the OS it?

Thanks

Alan

You can install and run games from an external hard drive just like you would with an internal one, however the only downside is the performance of the drive may be an issue when running games. What interface is the external drive connected by? USB?

Yep you certainly can. My mate does this and has since changed computers, 90% of the games installed on the external drive load and work perfectly even on a different pc. In theory though it should be slightly slower but real world times may vary.

Thanks Guys

It's a Seagate 320Gig 7200 USB2 8meg Cache

I suppose the only way to know is to try it,at least now I know it may work.

Try soemthing like FEAR

Had a Seagate 320Gb drive connected to my pre-rebuild PC via USB 2.0 and had quite a few older games (MS Train Sim, Freelancer) installed on it as my internal HD capacity was only 120Gb (1 x 80, 1 x 40). It seemed to work fine, can't say I noticed any delay in loading though that might be due to the age of the software being used.

However unless you're an avid jpeg and mpg collector it's hard to see what you would use all that capacity for if not to install some applications.

Still hooked up post rebuild but other than backing up a few Mb of files, not much in use yet due to now having a total 480Gb of internal HD capacity!

Hi All

Well, I have loaded F.E.A.R - Far Cry and Stalker on my external drive and Far Cry and F.E.A.R run perfectly. Will try Stalker later today, though I don't expect any problems.

The reason for the large external drive is that I write and record music, and wave files take up a lot of space.

My main recording stuff is on the C drive, games are just used as a distraction when the creative juices don't flow.

Will let you know about Stalker later.
