Behind you... Naked!
I have gone to a local cafe quite regularly over the past few months, at least once a week, and to be honest, I try to go twice a week.

Since my accident, I am mostly reliant on other people to get me around, as I have had to hand in my licence until either I have my car fitted with hand controls or my legs start workign again.

So, I spend prettymuch all of my life in the house and I have the chance of going to sit in the cafe while my wife is doing the weekly shopping and this has been briliant for me. I sit there with a Laptop and either do nothing in particular or I chat with people, I really dont care what I do, because Im not sat at home doing it.

I think this is why half my posts to forums are 600 pages just to say hi but there you go.

Now, a couple of weeks ago, my Laptop failed to connect to their router, or rather it did, but I got limited connection and no internet. I was not too put off by it, it was fairly busy and so I assumed that was the cause.
The next time I went, it was the same but hardly anyone around and so I had a piddle with the networking, doing the more obvious fist of course, but then trying silly things just to see whats going on until I thought bugger it, I could reinstall anyway as I fancied giving Windows 7 another try on it ( This Laptop hates Windows 7 for some reason? ) and so I did some seriously nasty stuff to kind of experiment and see if I could repair it, and sure enough, no matter what I did, I got home and I was fully able to connect to my network just fine.

The next time I went, I had forgotten to install and so I was in teh same boat. However, I am a slick bugger, what I did, was use my phone to connect by enabling Wireless dongle mode on it. This then of course gives my Laptop full speed access to their router but using a different MAC Address.

This is why I think that they have disabled just the one laptop by the MAC addy because all my other devices connect to their network just fine, its only that one Laptop... The last time I went, I took one of my other Laptops as well, plus this one with Win7 on it and the other connected perfectly, this with Win 7 and then when I instaleld Win 8, just would not connect.

They have stopped me havent they?

Multiple questions.
First off, yes, absolutely I buy drinks and almost always buy a toastie.
I have never had a coffee go cold on me, withotu re-filling it. I always start off with a Large Cappucino and a Pepsi Max and after half an hor a toastie and another Coffee and when my wife comes for her break, a Latte and a pepsi and if i am there an hour after that, I will buy another large Cappa.

I have NEVER spent less than a tenner whenever I have been there.

Did I ask? Yes of course I have asked... They deny doing anything.

I cannot change the MAC on the Laptop... using the Phone or a Wifi Dongle bypasses the laptops MAC but I will have a look... Anyone have any ideas where to look?

The Laptop is a Clevo W650SF

I'm sure there will be a way to change the MAC via windows, google is your friend. Device manager, properties of the wifi adapter, advanced tab, set network address in the list of options.

Otherwise, buy a cheapo usb mini wifi adapter - it'll have a new MAC and if they block you again you'll probably be able to set your own in device manager.

Have a quick Google to see if you can find any newer (or older) WiFi drivers for your laptop. I've had a couple of instances where people change their home router and then their laptop won't connect to the new one but other devices/laptops will. Usually updating drivers fixes it, but one time I had to update the firmware on the router (BT!) before it would talk to my little Dell lappy.

Could be the café has changed their hardware/firmware and now it doesn't play nicely with your laptop. If new/old drivers don't fix it, I'd be tempted to buy a tiny, cheap WiFi dongle (something like this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-084-TP) to stick in a USB port to connect when you're at the café.

Ok, well, as I said, I have been using my phone as a WIFI adapter and I am perfectly happy with that, but it isnt the point.

I think I have been a bloody good customer of theirs for some time now, and for a giggle, I just logged onto their website - I dont know what I weas thinking really, but it said that I have 11455 points... Thats enough to buy everyone in costa a cup of coffee for a whole day!!! so, just consider how much moey I must have spent in there all of this time?

Hell, now that I think about it... LOL

So, no way can they accuse me of overstaying my welcome. I have more than paid for my stay ten fold, and its not like I am there all day every day... Its only while the wife is doing her shopping and thats all.

Ok, its probably me and I am in a mood like a whining smeghead right now, so I have had a play about with the MAC options... I found nothing obvious, however in the device manager properties of my LAN, I found NETWORK ADDRESS and it said not present, so I simply antered AABBCCDDEEFF and that seemed the length of a MAC ADDY and after a restart, I looked at the devices in my router and at first, I saw MASTER and it had the same IP as it always has, plus the MAC was not the MAC I gave it, however, on page 2, these was a second MASTER ( this PCs name ) and a different IP and when I looked, sure enough, it was my MAC.

I refreshed the list and the old one vanished... I keep forgetting this router remembers the devices and always gives all my network PCs the same IP all the time, util you actualy do a refresh.

So this is a great... Im back in there tomorrow and so I will have a play about to see whether that plays nicely with their router.

Given that my phone, tablets and anything else I have taken in, all connect perfectly but this one laptops does not, I do find it a bit suspect... If they have doen that to me, then it must have taken a bit of determination and examination of the devices that are connected to their router whenever I am there and when I am not... That kind of spying surely requires a program to keep an eye on the numbers surely? LOL

Spoofing a MAC addy is easy dude, takes 30secs at most.

Be careful though mate, they might just end up chucking a password on the wifi network.

You know... I never knew it was this easy for sure.
Its real easy and Im glad I know now so thats cool.
Its just one of those things I genuinely thought was hard-coded into network devices, and therefore not changeable. I honestly never knew that all it takes, as you say... 30 secons and its done!

You get a lovely warm feeling when you find out something silly like that. Its such a tiny pathetic little thing, but it can mean so much in the right circumstances... Such as this one I suppose.

Thank you all.

Another possibility..

Some wireless adapters don't allow you to connect to wifi networks on SSID 13

I love learning stuff like this, thanks for the thread.

Yeah me too!
Im more impresed when I learn stuff thats so bloody obvious, that you kick yourself.
Whats worse for me, is that 13 years ago, I had an accident and I smashed my head in and I had to relearn a few things.
EWven worse, is that 2 years ago ( and this is so stupid but true ) but I had a far worse accident and now I forget silly things all the time, so i dont know if I already knew this or not... Probably not to be honest as I dont think I have ever needed to... or have I? LOL

But seriously, yeah, its great to learn things that are minor things. They often make up for the bigger things.

I just need to keep writing these little things down, because if I dont, they are gone in minutes.

You could also tether from your phone if you are not happy spoofing your Mac, if it allows it.

Oh thats what I have been doing yes.

The phone thankfully allows me to connect to their WIFI and then share its internet via USB or Bluetooth. It is for want of a better word, simply acting like a WIFI dongle at that stage and it works brilliantly as I am getting a solid 150Mb connection every time.

I am absolutely not afraid to meddle with my MAC now that I know what to do, I have polayed with my Desktop PC but not yet gone back to Kosta to try out the Laptop. I usually only get to go on Teusdays or fridays and I went on friday but never got the chance to try it due to so many people chatting to me. ( Makes a change - Billy no mates! )
