Hey,

I'm using a program on my PC to sync a folder on my desktop PC with a folder on my netbook when both are available over the LAN.

For some reason, my desktop is connected at 100 Mbps but the netbook at 54 Mbps.

Any idea why this could be?

The desktop is connected via ethernet but the netbook is on wireless.

Thanks

Neil

backing up over wireless g isn't much fun. i gave up and went back to my trusty usb2 external drive. it's about 10 times faster. :p

54 is the limit of the wireless in the laptop and/or router but even then you won't get that speed from it.

Ok. It's not for backing up. I use it for syncing my lightroom data folder to my netbook Just wondered if there was anyway it could be faster?

The wifi whilst saying it is connected at 54Mbs, you will only see 2-2.5MB/s out of it. A N-class wireless adaptor/router would help but the speeds then will be around 6-7MB/s on a 144/150Mbs wireless connection speed.

A NAS might be an easier option instead of a 'live sync', just have everything stored on there for use on both machines.

So wi-fi is only capable of 54Mbps maximum then?

Wireless can go quicker but you need to have a quick wireless card in the laptop and wireless router. It could be your router is 150-300MB but the laptop is only 54 or vise versa. If you can check and find out the speed/spec of each, that would help to begin with :)
