Lock On:Flaming Cliffs 2.0 coming Jan 2010

Oh how I wish my PC doth not suck. :( My 8800GTS 320Mb couldn't cope with the original Lomac however, it had a bug rendering, meaning the FPS were fine, circa 100 FPS or so, but would produce a weird shimmering effect that made it unplayable, and I had to uninstall. Does FC2.0 go anyway to redressing this?

No it is still in FC2, it is a bug in the terrain engine caused by shadows cast from clouds, there is however a mod the disables those shadows and solves the problem.

So , just to be clear , what do I need , in order of installation to be able to run this ?

I think its :

Lock on ( full game) or GOTY with Flaming Cliffs ?

Flaming Cliffs add on (see above)

DCS Black Shark (cos I want it :-))

Flaming Cliffs 2

In that order ? Any other patches to be aware of ? All help appreciated :D

To install FC2 all you need is the original Lock On.

@Gimpymoo; DCS and FC2 should be available on Direct2Drive, I think, if that helps. I like steam, but buying direct from the Developers means they get the most return for their product. I can't see any advantages would steam offer in this case.

Nate

I personally prefer the install method via Steam, mainly just me being Lazy.

Would still rather buy direct from the developers instead of D2D though.

Bought LOMAC and FC 2 direct from the DEVS so completely agree with you on that one, excellent games - so good in fact they have pulled me away from BFBC2, but I've always been a big flight sim fan.

Just getting to grips with the A-10 missions, its been 6 years since I "tried" LOMAC!!

Well worth the money and highly recommended.

The Multiplayer Lobby/server browser is now part of the Sim, Hyperlobby is no longer required. Unfortunately there is no chat window in the lobby, currently, so you have to wait to get in game to chat.

FC2 installs 2 Icons on your desktop, one for singleplayer and one for Multiplayer.

Saw this After Action Report over on SimHQ and had to share :)

So I started the A-10 campaign included with FC2. Here is the first mission from that campaign..

The mission is to depart our airfield and fly just a short distance north to destroy an enemy tank platoon that has taken up positions on the other side of a river.

2missfc35.jpg

2missfc36.jpg

2missfc37.jpg

My wingman and I depart our airbase for the short 5 minute hop to the battlefield.

2missfc01.jpg

Accompanying us is a flight of F-16s.

2missfc02.jpg

As we approach the target area a voice comes over the communications channel indicating where our targets are, followed by an indication that the targets have been marked with yellow smoke. It is difficult, almost impossible to make out the small tanks among all the ground clutter, but the yellow smoke at least gives a good reference point.

2missfc03.jpg

On my first pass, I stupidly decide to use my Rockeyes..

2missfc04.jpg

After the canister splits open the bomblets are tightly packed..

2missfc05.jpg

But fan out as they continue flying through the air..

2missfc06.jpg

The target area contains more than just T-72s though, as a burst of AAA rips through my right wing taking out my right engine. I'll never learn that flying low is a bad idea!

2missfc07.jpg

Meanwhile my cluster bombs land harmlessly between two of the tanks..

2missfc07-1.jpg

I convert some of the energy to altitude and assess the situation. I can limp along at about 220 knots, and I've lost an engine but my hydraulics seem to be in good order. I accidentally hit the CTRL-C key instead of the cancel warning key though and I lose my canopy (embarassing!).

2missfc08.jpg

The flight back to base is very short and I'm anxious to get back into the battle. I had released my wingman to "attack air defenses" so I'm hoping he is softening up the area for my later return.

2missfc09.jpg

As my wingman exits the area a few minutes after I do, he has taken some damage and trails fuel from the right wing.

Meanwhile, back on the ramp I've ordered my weapons replenished and wait patiently for my damages to be fixed.

2missfc11.jpg

After a few minutes I'm back in business (the fastest canopy replacement job ever!) and as I taxi out I see one of the recovering F-16s taxiing in. Sadly, he lost his wingman over the target area.

2missfc12.jpg

This time I take a bit more of analytical approach to the target. I look at my map and see that my targets are just north of the bridge that crosses the second river. That will help me identify the area since by now the yellow marking smoke has ceased.

2missfc13.jpg

2missfc14.jpg

This time I head out to sea to the east to give myself a safe and easy run in toward the target area. This time I'm going to use my stand-off capability with my Maverick missiles.

2missfc15.jpg

That works! I see the glow of the enemy tanks right where they are supposed to be. I fiddle with the controls and lock one of them up.

2missfc16.jpg

Rifle!

2missfc17.jpg

Breaking back around to the north to parallel the coast I watch my missile track in.

2missfc18.jpg

Boom! Take that ya' bastage!

2missfc19.jpg

2missfc20.jpg

I come back around and am really starting to like these Mavericks!

2missfc21.jpg

2missfc22.jpg

2missfc23.jpg

After I destroy the three tanks I get a mission success message and am cleared to depart the area. Hmmm..but I still have all this cool weaponry hanging from my aircraft.. I pick out another target just north of the tanks and I luck out and snag myself a ZSU-23..! Now THAT is satisfying!

2missfc24.jpg

Doing some high altitude recon I spot another series of tanks loitering along one of the other roads leading into the town. They are very hard to see, but using some geographic reference points helps locate the targets once I roll in.

2missfc25.jpg

Let's try those Rockeyes again!

2missfc26.jpg

Errr..not so much..

2missfc27.jpg

How about Mark-82s?

2missfc28.jpg

2missfc29.jpg

Hmm..still not so much. I pretty much figure you would have to score a direct, smack on shot with one of those to kill a main battle tank.

2missfc30.jpg

So..stupid me, I'm hungry to kill one of those guys, so I roll in with the Avenger. Rounds slap the ground all around the tank, but I can't set it ablaze.

2missfc31.jpg

But my greed and stupidity lure me down low into the hornet's nest and another ZSU opens up on me and brings my little mission to an end. As my wing tears off I hit the eject button and just manage to get the chute open as I hit the ground.

2missfc32.jpg

2missfc33.jpg

Escape and evasion anyone??

2missfc38.jpg

My mission results are fair. I get a mission success, although I don't consider any mission where you don't bring yourself home to be a success. I did get hits on the T-72s with both the Mk-82s and the cannon, just not enough to put them out of business.

Fantastic stuff! Looking forward to the next mission..

Cool story.

I just can't get my head round the game.

Too many controls. For example how the hell do you lock on the mavericks?

Dive bombing is unbelievably satisfying.

It won't take you long to get up to speed with Lock on (Doesn't hurt to read the manuals either :) ). The manuals are in the Startmenu and the Doc folder of the program.

There is also a fairly comprehensive Lock On FC2 Video Training Page on the main website.

A-10 Maverick Video.

I must pick this bad boy up at some point i have been waiting for so long.. just not had much time this past week.

cheers Nate--IRL-- for the thread.

Time to dust down the x52s :)

Another After Action Report (AAR) from Beachav8r, he's up to Mission #8 in the A-10 campaign now.

Read all his AAR's over on SimHQ -> http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/forums/71/1/After_Action_Reports.html

After my failed attempt to strike the clustered fuel and supply trucks, I'm tasked to step it up a notch and strike two different armor positions. The briefing even warns that rearming might be a requirement.

9miss01.jpg

The strike sites are fairly non-descript and I know this is going to be a brutal mission with lots of eyestrain.

9miss02.jpg

The high overcast and lighting add a lot of atmosphere to the mission...

9miss03.jpg

My wingman and I depart and head directly to the east and the first (southern) strike point.

9miss04.jpg

9miss05.jpg

The yellow smoke pops and I quickly get eyes on the first target tank nearby...

9miss06.jpg

And off goes a missile...

9miss07.jpg

Elsewhere in the mission area a pair of Apaches work over enemy positions to our north.

9miss08.jpg

As we break away and set up for multiple runs at the target from stand-off range the enemy fires many short range IR missiles at us, but they are usually decoyed easily by our flares.

9miss09.jpg

On one run in I have the pleasure of seeing one of my missiles strike a ZSU-23 at the same time it opens up on me...
9miss10.jpg

The mountains to the southeast look like a good place to run an insurgency from..

9miss11.jpg

After much straining and close approaches onto the target I finally spot the last tank at the first strike waypoint.

9miss12.jpg

As I transit between the south strike point and the north strike point a couple of rounds from a ZSU hit me and knock out my hydraulics which slows my control response but everything else is working fine.

9miss13.jpg

I peel off to the south and a couple infantry launched IR SAMs arc up toward me but the flares do their job.

9miss14.jpg

Fuel pours from my right wing as I taxi off the runway at my base where I've landed for repairs and rearming.

9miss15.jpg

I laugh when I see the two Apaches enter the traffic pattern at the field, one of them is shot so full of holes he looks like a ragged piece of cheese, the other has a few rounds in the canopy. I can't believe the first one is still flying. They shouldn't have gotten so shot up with those awesome stand-off Hellfires.

9miss16.jpg

9miss17.jpg

After taking off and heading back to the east to the north strike area I pull up my Mavericks and see a vehicle on the road. I assume this is my target because the briefing stated that they north targets would be on the "hardball", so I fire.

9miss18.jpg

It turns out it just a truck moving on the road and I've wasted a missile.

I finally do spot the correct target area and quickly identify two tanks and manage to get off two shots on one pass.

9miss19.jpg

One isn't a tank though, but I'll take a kill on a SAM vehicle any day...

9miss20.jpg

Out of missiles and with too many low and high threats to effectively use any of my mavity weapons, I head back to base and pull up on the ramp long enough to grab some weapons.

9miss21.jpg

In my utter stupidity though I am distracted as I leave the ramp and I run my wing into a refueler! Fortunately, I just catch on fire and rip the wing off.

9miss22.jpg

After a few minutes of repair, I'm amazed that the sim lets me taxi the rest of the way THROUGH the refueler and once I'm free I'm good to go!

Up at the target area I find one more tank, but it takes me 10 minutes of looking while dodging AAA fire. After I launch my first Maverick I lock back on it with my second so that I can watch the explosion on my monitor.

9miss23.jpg

With two tanks burning it is a struggle to find the third tank. I refuse to resort to labels, but I do use the zoom and pan liberally to find the last tank.

9miss24.jpg

He's right there next to the power transmission tower.

9miss25.jpg

Once I get an idea of where a target is, I don't have much problem re-finding it. But finding them is darn difficult!

9miss26.jpg

9miss27.jpg

I get the message that I've cleared the north target area and I head for home.

9miss28.jpg

Now - you all are going to think I'm lying, but this is the God's honest truth and how it actually happened. I made a beeline for homebase, which is only about 2 minutes flying time back to the west. A few miles from the base I see my caution light is on, but I didn't get an audible warning, so I can't figure out if I got hit by AAA or something. I glance down at my caution panel and the L/R Fuel Low warning lights are illuminated and the fuel gauge is reading zero. I had just put the speedbrakes out to slow for the landing, so I quickly retracted them, then added throttle to keep the speed up and I realized the engines weren't responding. I really had run out of fuel! Where is the low fuel warning? Do those lights just come on when you are totally OUT of fuel?

9miss29.jpg

I had just enough energy left to make the runway, but I elected to land on the taxiway instead because I suspect (but am not sure) that if you exit a mission while on the runway you might not get credit for the mission (?). I clear the tail of the C-17 parked in a revetment at the end of the taxiway and plunk it down right on the taxiway.

9miss30.jpg

9miss31.jpg

Now, according to the after action report, I flew for about 45 minutes, so unless I didn't have full tanks at the beginning of the mission I have only one explanation for why I ran out of fuel. I didn't refuel during either of my 2 rearming stops, but I did receive that damage and was streaming fuel when I was hit between target areas. Perhaps I lost that much fuel in the short time I was flying back to base and then, not having refueled, the level was very low? No matter what, I can't believe the fuel ran out literally at the last second. Another 30 seconds of flying around away from the airfield and I wouldn't have had enough speed to make it home. One of the coolest things I've ever done in a sim (I once lost both engines in EECH though and managed to autorotate to an airfield where I got repaired, that was pretty cool too..)

9miss32.jpg

And verification that it was the ZSU that hit me..

Looking forward to the next mission!

This is such a good game, I am having an absolute blast with it - steep learning curve though (have not played LOMAC properly before), just finally done the first A-10 mission after watching the training videos - took out main targets with Mavericks and then got overly confident trying to destroy ZSU-23-4 with rockets // avenger, I didnt destroy the target and it took out my ACS and hydraulics, anyway limping home with both engines ok I attempted to land with no HUD (I need to watch the landing video as first attempted landing in the game lol) only to get clearance from the tower but I took so long lining up the first time ATC gave up and cleared another aircraft for landing which was taxying down the runway just as I was about to touch down! seeing this I hit full power and climbed (I have attached the pic for your amusement :D) next up I re-request landing clearance only to be told to go into a hold pattern (orbit) just what you want with no hydraulics, anyway I finally made it after a short while and was able to land the plane with no issues!!!

Fantastic game, so addictive!

Firing rockets which hit everything but the target!
ScreenShot_125.jpg

Full power & climb asap!
ScreenShot_060.jpg

Holding pattern (done this once in FSX but not very good at it, need to learn)
ScreenShot_062.jpg

Landed finally with damage
ScreenShot_063.jpg

Lessons learned:

1. Need more practice
2. Need to learn to land "the right way"
3. Use your wingman
4. Use all ordnance!
:D

EDIT: Just found this, this morning: http://flankertraining.com/ironhand/flightbasics.htm

...quite useful, now wondering how I can practice landings etc without ruining my mission stats (since FC2 seems to have lost all my training missions ingame!) perhaps setup empty custom mission for free flight?

Yeah never seen them before until now, very very good - my main issue atm is struggling with identification - that is so difficult especially when the area is peppered with AAA // SAM's.

Can anyone recommend any further tutorials (excluding the in built ones) // books?

Cheers
