Lock Question

Otherwise you could try swapping the current door handle for one of these round ones with the lock in the middle type things...

You cant just put a lock on your door in a rented house.

if your in a student house, putting a key lock on your door would turn it into a house of multiply occupancy. If you have a contract for just your room your already in one, if you are all on the same contract you'll want to talk to your landlord before you go adding keylocks to doors.

Plus you will need to get your own TV license as well. Stop telling the lad he will be fine. You need to ask your landlord before you go around modding your door.

I know there a lot of regulations and rules and things you are supposed to comply with once you start putting locks on doors in rented houses, the main being the TV license issue. We dont have a TV license at all as yet (only been here a week or so) and even then I dont have a TV and am not planning on getting one anytime soon.

Cheers for your help though, it doesnt go unappreciated.

I can't believe there is a whole second subject of discussion in this thread - the one on legality, health & safety and the simple fact the OP cannot just simply add a lock to his door if it's physically possible or not.

Yet there are a masive percentage of peoiple chosing to ignore this part of the conversation.

The OP adding a lock to his door effects the landlord and every other person in that building at a major level.
However there are people treating this is a £5 B&Q issue - forums eh?

Oh no I'd better get a tv licence for the toilet then, it's got a lock on the door

Does every single individual in a shared accomodaton need a tv licence?? surely not  how much are tv licences :p?

Yup - if there a four rooms with locks you need four licenses.

However if one of the four has a TV in his room and the rest don't and he has a TV license that also covers a TV in the lounge too - your license will cover your room and the common room.

Wrong. Locks has nothing to do with it.

You only need separate licences if you are each on individual tenancy agreements.

If you are all on a joint tenancy, you only need 1 licence on anyone's name - it doesn't matter which one - just split the cost. Usually £120 or so, but if you are students not living at the place over summer, it is only around 3/4 of it.
