Loft boarding

not just as simple as people have said, cutting out the hole in the ceiling in the right place, as well as having to trim out with timber for the loft ladder....If its going to be trod on a lot, youd have to make sure the ceiling joists are adequate, whch they probs wont be, 4x2's most likely, if you were to board over the existing joists, expect cracks in your ceilings below.....a days work for someone who knows what there doing if the joists dont need replacing...(if its not going to be in use often).

Could say 12-15 an hour for most tradesmen...do the maths + materials.

There is a hole + drop down hatch apparently. It won't be used a lot, light load. Can't have heavy load anyway (joist load aside) as it's one of those 'V' roofs, where it's supported by the horizontal.

Apparently he wouldn't budge on the figure £1, so we're asking around for more quotes.

You don't seem to know what is being done so it's impossible to say if it's over priced or not.

It could well be a fair price, people seem to forget that it isn't DIY, it's their job and there is a difference between mates rates and charity.

If you want real mates rates then he should 1) be a good mate 2) you get the materials and do as much prep as you can and 3) you buy him a few drinks and owe him a favour.

Would depend on what you're getting in that price but if its a reasonable loft covering with the boards + a good ladder then it seems good. Is your house a new build? older houses can be hell on earth to do, as in most of a day (even seen some go 9-9), new houses can be done in a few hours though.

I'm home soon, I'll get some pics/measurements next weekend. I'm probably going to end up doing it myself.

Mum has asked him for a full breakdown, he's certainly taking his time. But said he "can't" budge on the price. Like I said, maybe it is a lot of work.

New build, ja.

it's possible that it's not worth the hassle if he isn't going to make much from the job, especially if he runs into any problems and takes longer than expected

it's a relatively simple job so just do it yourself tbh
