Log Stove

I always find logs a little bit rubbish until the fire is nicely settled in. Get some bog standard coal for starting, anthracite for ones it's going and a few nice logs to perk things up and watch them burn.

As for where to get them from, do you have a local coal delivery guy? They'll fill up a coal house every few weeks/months and it'll work out cheaper than buying individual bags.

Thanks godinman , it's not a dual fuel though - wood only .
 
Buying wood is dearer than using gas or oil to heat the house so decide if its full time heating or a nice evening thing first!

Ideally you want as much free wood as you can get, you need some softwood kindling to get it going and ideally some softwood to get the fire going with logs - hardwood then to run on (hardwood is tricker to get going hence the softwood first)
 
I have got 2 log burners downstairs and I have had them for 15 years now, I buy my logs locally for £75 for a 4x4 pickup load which has been seasoned for 15-18 months. I think this is a very good price. Over winter 1 load will last 3 weeks ish if I have both fires going (07-2100 hrs).

The best bit of advise I could offer is to buy a stove pipe thermometer to ensure you are burning at the correct temp, before I brought these 3 years ago I was wasting a large amount of fuel up the chimney. By doing this more heat goes into the room / you save fuel / save causing damage to your flue liner / chimney by burning too hot.
 
We've got a log/coal burner in our living room.

The guy we purchased the house from was an upholster so left us bags and bags of off-cuts etc... My old man has just done out his bathroom as well so I've got another few bags full of wood from that!

I was thinking of what I might do in the future. There's a Tree Surgeon that lives a few roads away from us, does anybody know what said surgeons do with all their wood?!

My missus' dad uses a trick where he takes the dog for a walk in the woods, and always manages to come back with a few logs each time. Now has a nice little wood store! ^^

There's a tree surgeon over here in Wolves that actually has another business set up to sell all of his wood as fire wood.
 
I know someone who gets a lot of his wood off Freecycle, pallets, old joists, & trees which have been cut down, but need removing, basically any wood which will burn.

Plus he gets a lot of fallen wood from the surrounding woods, & he snaffles wood from the skips.
